Re: Electric heat is too expensive, very high bills/useage
what’s the explanation for 1.5’s being tough to heat
Re: A shout out
Life time guarantees like that don't exist anymore.
I remember my mother's cousin named Barney McGill, the was a Bond Bread home delivery truck driver for many years and a self taught craftsman woodworker and all around handyman. He would make a little side money by asking if the bread customer wanted him to fix a screen door after he was finished his deliveries for the day. and stuff like that. When I was in grade school, I would visit him and in his basement he has a full workshop with power saws and sanders and all kinds of tools. When he retired from Bond Bread, he came to my home and made the basement in our home a full fledged bar dance floor and pool hall. It was a great opportunity for me to learn all kinds of woodworking and how to use and care for tools.
I remember that he would tell my parents that all his work had a lifetime warranty. "His Lifetime." and when he passed away, all that great work that he did lasted much longer than he did. I miss him and all the times we spent together.
Re: Electric heat is too expensive, very high bills/useage
Go with floor heat and a wall hung gas boiler. Can't beat it for comfort.

Re: New Backflow Preventer Failed
the nonpotable is because it isn't low lead. If you read the code carefully it says that low lead components are only required on lines supplying water for cooking or drinking so the feed to the boiler doesn't need to be low lead according to the code.

Re: Air elimination demo
Cool thanks! This document describes how, toward the bottom in the Time Lapse section:
Air elimination demo
I built this demo, 1" copper tube running 8.8 gpm, room temperature.
30- 35% glycol.
I pump 1/2 tube of air from the hand air pump. Run until the fluid turns clear.
The Discal cleared the fluid 100% within 20 minutes.
I switched to the ramp purger, wit 18" upstream piping for best performance. I ran it for an hour and 15 minutes and the fluid is still cloudy, foam.
Switched back to the Discal and same 20 minute result to clear the air microbubbles out.
I'd guess maybe 20% of ramp purgers are properly installed with 18" straight piping upstream, making performance even worse.
I'll try the demo tomorrow with plain tap water for comparison.

Re: Air elimination demo
I'll film it tomorrow and send it to Ray for a Boiler Room Detective post.
How do I make it a time lapse? Using my I-phone for the video.

Re: Oversizing a Modulating Boiler with 10 to 1 turndown
@mwong00 It is easier to reply to our query here.
After reading @jesmed1 's summary
I have a pretty clear idea of what you are looking for. The only thing that you added in the messages you sent me is that you have a defective L8148J control now. How did you determine that the control is bad?
The next question I have is: What is the white control in this picture and where is it connected to on your boiler's wiring
Finally, this started out 3 years ago, as a question about selecting a Weil McLain AquaBalance and turned into some unusual theoretical discussion about selecting an oversized ModCon boiler on purpose, which by the way, is not a real good idea.
Now you have everything in @jesmed1 comment with the addition that a new boiler is out of the question and you need a replacement for your L8148J
Does that just about sum it up?
Re: Oversizing a Modulating Boiler with 10 to 1 turndown
@jesmed1 You are absolutely right. @EdtheHeaterMan is unbelievably helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. He make a recommendation that I never thought of — put a time delay on the B3 wire from the Aquastat to the Sparker. it does the same thing as a lower temp adjustment

Re: Ecobee with Steam
I do believe that the Ecobees — particularly the newer ones — can be programmed to play at least decently, if not well…
