I'd use bolts and washers. I wouldn't want to try to thread anything into those due to cracking risk.

It may have to do with you wearing them until there's almost nothing left. Then when you wash and dry them the little bit left just blows out of the exhaust.

I'm not sure I like the wall colour!!! Black is so dark and depressing. Next time maybe you can get something more vibrant like persimmon or tangerine.
