Re: 1895 Detroit Home - Single Pipe Steam Unknown Condition - Initial Inspection
The system is likely ok but everything about how that boiler is installed is wrong.
Re: Steam boiler
I don't recommend a boiler cleaner. Usually all they manage is to make the boiler surge, which will only add to your woes.
More to the point, unless there is something really and truly strange in the local water, the smell isn't coming from the steam or the water. There are many possible sources for a smell, but the bottom line is that it is likely to be something which is getting warmed up by the radiators or the piping. And the "something" is often mold in the walls or floors…
Re: Trying to use an Ultrasonic GPM meter to figure out my system head.
if the numbers Ed posted are reasonable, you need more pump, the 0015 isn’t going to get what you want
The 0026 not a cheap date or equivalent.
Maybe find an older style non electronic pump
a 26-99 Grundfos would cover that load

Re: Line voltage at thermostat
It wouldn't be allowed with line voltage wiring (except with service cable and dryer and range ckts in certain cases), but as long as the signal on the bare wire or casing is grounded or can be grounded there aren't really rules prohibiting it in low energy wiring.
Re: Triangle Tube Ceasing Operations
Closing their doors may stop some of the hemorrhaging, but it won’t relieve them of the liability for what’s already out there in the field.
We had over 25 hours trying to correct one that we installed at the end of last season before they announced the recall. Everyday, tech support kept telling us to do something different when they knew there was a design flaw in the boiler. We finally demanded and got a new boiler. Then, a couple of weeks later they announced the recall. They knew all along that there were issues.
It’s a shame since they were the ones that introduced the fire tube HX in the US and the original boilers were very reliable.

that stranded inventory might be better than money in the bank.

A damn good Alarm System.
Electric baseboard in critical areas.

Re: Static Plate confusion (firing down Utica SFH3100).
"Trace of smoke" is one of those hoary traditions that refuses to die. No properly-installed and -tuned flame-retention burner has any business making any smoke whatsoever.
I was taught this way, by @Firedragon , @Alan R. Mercurio and others: When tuning a modern burner we first look for the point at which the burner starts making smoke, then open the air gate just until the smoke disappears and you have a nice clean test paper.
Then we add enough air to reduce the CO2 percentage by one point. For example, if the zero-smoke point is at 13.5% CO2, we'd set it for 12.5%.
This gives a bit of headroom, also called a margin, to allow for changes in fuel or air supply. Both air and oil get more dense as they get cooler, and if the burner is set too close to the edge of clean combustion at the servicing, these seasonal changes can cause it to make smoke or soot.
The proof that this works can be seen the next time we service that unit. There is little to no brushing and vacuuming to be done. The unit has therefore maintained its efficiency throughout the season, the customer is happy, and the oil supplier probably isn't (but I don't work for the oil company).
Re: My old Buderus
The well for the new Aquastat is the same one as where the sensors for the 2107 were.
What they did is totally incompetent.

wall furnaces can lose their pilot light and then you are still without heat
How much redundancy is enough?
Neighbors, friends or property managers you can at least stay in contact with.
