If it is glycol, that dark color often indicates the glycol has gone acidic It will attack the soft metals
I would flush the system, run a cleaner, then refill
If there are no pipes exposed to freezing, you may not need glycol
Those look like the older flow setters that you clamped a meter around to read. I don’t see a reason for check valves on the loops?

@jumper, Actually, it had (has) a thermostatic vent at each radiator return.

Use caution if the valve hasn't been used in a while. You may want to loosen the nut on the other end to get it to move easier. This may cause a slight leak but will stop when you retighten the nut

That is the type of quarter-turn valve used to turn off gas. You will need a wrench to operate it.
As to whether it is the main or not, we cannot tell from the photo. Trace it back toward the meter; if there are no other branches that is the main shutoff.

Can you share any pictures? I would recommend listing them at a a very reasonable price but a price higher than the scrap value. This will optimize your chances of them going to good use.

I can see no purpose to that extension from the location where there should be a vent of some kind of vent to expel air from the convector. You may find it in a circa 1950s popular mechanics magazine, when there were many innovative ideas. But I can see no benefit.
