Re: Is Overkill gonna hurt…
I'd say go for it. Saving big bucks on the one time purchase will more that offset all the repairs and long term effects of shore cycling. Besides It ain't my money! and you don't know where to find me after you realize that you have to pay the ongoing costs for years to come.
But I have been known to be sarcastic at times, so maybe not such a good idea.

Re: Old 1/2" copper not same 1/2" size
But we stretch the truth for for comedic effect. That is why some people have no sense of humor, they are too literal.
That is also why some folks are not mechanically inclined, They can not see things in their minds eye. they need to actually see it.
And that is why some people don't know what a quasi-vapor steam boiler looks like. They can't understand made-up words that are not in the Webster Dictionary.
Literally every word that has ever existed was made up.

Not to mention "quasi" is most certainly in the Webster dictionary.

Re: combustion analyzer
The combustion analyzer my father in law used was a stack thermometer. After the measured the stack temp., he would wipe the stem on a white paper towel. That was the smoke test. If there was too much black on the paper towel then it needed more air. I don't think flame retention burners were invented yet, do just about every oil burner has at least a #1 smoke.
He didn't like that new fangled cad cell control either. Sometimes you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Re: Gas Ventless Fireplace
There is not a single building scientist in the US who endorses lung vented fireplaces. They stink, dump a gallon of water every 3 hrs into the home, require maintenance, stink, often are grossly oversized for the space, installed in mismatched climatic zones/ poor construction, they stink, and they generate noxious compounds such as aldehydes and NOx. Did I mention they stink?
Go direct vent or electric.
MASS requires you to choose products approved by the Plumbing Board and lots of documentation. Good luck.
But do they stink?

Re: Old 1/2" copper not same 1/2" size
Just for fun, I tried the swaging method myself. I cut a piece of 1/2" copper in half, heated one end cherry red to soften, let it cool, then swaged it open to 5/8" ID using a $10 Home Depot hammer-in swaging tool. Clean and flux mating surfaces, insert the other piece of 1/2" copper, and solder together. Worked like a charm.Be very careful about what you post here. You might have just infringed on Mr Recker's Patent 2,040,628. You never know if the mattress tag police are monitoring this forum.

Re: Seal flue and thimble
Well, I don't think in the thirty years I've been in this house anyone has mentioned the chimney and I never thought about it, obviously I hadn't done my homework. Since it's been so long I'll probably get a chimney specialist to look at it. I do know that when I open the little door there's nothing obviously awful right there. Now I'm going to have to learn about chimneys, chimney liners whatever they are ... Sorry, that'll be more questions.
Just be careful when removing it next year for inspecting the chimney base.
Still need to know if my chimney is safe for Santa! My understanding is that nowadays his advanced team checks out every chimney before the Big Guy will consider going down it. I know that I (infected now by tiny bits of knowledge thanks to this website) in his position would not go down any chimney with an oil burner unless I knew CO2, O2, CO, excess air, draft, and that there was zero smoke.
