Re: CycleGard LWCO & Heat-Timer - Bad Match?
Outdoor reset and steam??? how does that idea work in your mind? You must imagine something about the burner operating less when the outdoor temperature is higher and the burner operating more when the outdoor temperature is colder. Heat timer can do that, but is that ODR?
When using hot water and outdoor reset the concept is the water temperature in the radiators will be lower (like 120°F) when the outdoor temperature is higher (like 50°F). When the outdoor Temperature is lower (Like 10°F) the radiator temperature is higher (like 180°F)
I don't see how to make the steam in the radiators a lower temperature than 212°F… Do you?
Re: Collapsing steam in main radiator slow to heat
if it is a capped pipe and it doesn't connect to something like a return, the pipe itself isn't a problem but how is the header arranged, can any condensate that gets in it drain somewhere?
Re: How to delete boiler coil and replace it with a HPWH
Thank you Bob. I'll make sure to read it. Some great info in there.
I'll be using a similar pump to the Metland's. It is made by Watts. I'll install it at the HPWT, with the valve kit at the farthest bathroom. Right now the plan is to use wi-fi outlets controlled from the cell phone. Anytime anyone wants to shower, they'll have to tap the timer on the app, preset to 3 minutes.. This will minimize the issue with the recovery rate. Not sure my wife will go for it but I sure will. If she doesn't get used to it, I might get one with a remote button, but I am having a hard time finding one with multiple remotes to control one outlet. Hub is an option but I'd rather not go that route.
Re: Rehashing the old Williamson vs Weil McLain comparison, and new boiler specs
Drop headers and extra risers are fine if you want to spend the $$.
So I will ask the same question I always ask.
Has anyone piped a boiler to the MFG minimum and had problems?
Re: Main air vent location
@Gateacre I would pipe the vent as @ethicalpaul said but I like raising the vents up in the air as high as possible.
I would bust the elbow off and put a tee in its place. Come off the tee pointing up as Paul showed the pipe will be crooked due to the pitch of the main pitching down. Put a short nipple on the tee then a 45—-nipple——45 then a long riser pipe—-big mouth vent.
Raising the vent gives it more distance from the water hammer….maybe
Re: Intermittent vs. Interrupted
I am sure there is something to what George says. But the old burners the transformers lasted weather they were on constant tor intermittent. I don't remember changing transformers on burners with constant ignition more often.
The problems got worse when the electronic ignitors came out.
Re: Triangle Tube Woes... Fault codes
It could be the fan. Could also be a loose wire.
Parts are available still. Also the fan from the IBC HC/DC will also fit. P-708
Its not a swap out one for another… The venturi needs to be reused.
For a contractor familiar w/ the boiler its a 1 hour job.
Re: Hudson Valley boiler replacement
Look in the "find a contractor" link at the top, there are several very good contractors in NY. @JohnNY and @Mad Dog_2 are the first I'd try to see if they can do work out of the city but there are several others to try as well especially if you are trying to do it in the off season.
Re: The Loneliest Place, my new article for PHC News magazine.
Ray, Nice work! This line really resonated… "The hardest skill to teach isn’t wiring diagrams or flame signals, it’s patience." Thanks!
Yours, Larry
Re: At my whit's end with banging pipes, squirting vents and No heat! Please help!
I do thorough steam heat evaluations for NYC mid-rise and multi-family buildings all season long. Nearly all of them have the same complaints you list here. I'm not cheap, but neither is throwing money at the inexplicably uninformed people who are frequently hired to work on these old systems and never get it right.
