Re: New vs. Old Boiler Energy Use Differences Suprising to Us
This is in an apartment right? Are the tenants cranking the tstat up and using the boiler differently than they did with the old boiler? Did you install a new Tstat? Is it programmed differently?

Re: “Vacuum Boost” for steam heating system
A little over-the-top....no?
Why you would post a study that is obviously flawed and totally factually incorrect is beyond my comprehension.No. This was getting too personal.
(snip)
Now, certain people have no idea what they are doing.........
(snip)
You also have no understanding of what my original point is regarding the initial efficiency of the system and cling to an argument that doesn't agree with the First Law
Re: “Vacuum Boost” for steam heating system
Heatloss is absolutely required to determine the system efficiency of a heating system, whether you wish to believe it or not.No, they are two completely different things. The efficiency of a heating system is determined by how well it transfers the heat from the boiler to the rooms. Once the heat has reached the rooms, the heating system's job is done.
What happens to the heat after it reaches the rooms is a completely different issue. This is where the building's heat loss comes into play. Both of these factors figure into a building's overall fuel consumption.
Again, this thread is about improvements to the heating system, not the building envelope or anything else
Re: Main vent size?
No shortcuts this time...
Ok, the sizing charts were very helpful, so here we go. The existing vents have 1/4" fittings. I assume I can simply increase from 1/4" to the size of the vent fitting? I may need a shorter nipple (vertical clearance is tight, especially on the other vent, not pictured) but this shouldn't be a big deal. 1/4" x 1/2" and 1/4" x 3/8" black couplings seem to be readily available.
As for the mains themselves, they're 2" pipe all the way around. From the header, the short main is 45 linear feet of pipe, and the long main is 55 linear feet. I guess the long main isn't all that much longer, so it may be that the same size vent will do for both, but I'll leave it to the experts to figure out!
(And just so you don't think I'm too cheap... the Lowe's vents have the advantage of being available today; my 2-year-old's bedroom is on the long main, which gets steam MUCH more slowly than the short main, probably due to a vent that looks like it's been partly painted shut. But once the sizing is confirmed, I will take your advice and order the Gortons at once!)

Re: Just skimmed and flushed boiler- QUESTIONS!
Could be the vent, but it could also be the stem of the valve handle on the floor too. Check and see if that's leaking next time it's up. I recently had to re-pack an old radiator's valve stem. Also check the fittings where the valve connects to the radiator and make sure they're squared up and tight. Use a hand-held mirror around where you think there might be a leak. Have to get it fairly close, but don't get burned.

Re: Hydronic Piping Design
Perhaps needless to say -- there are other ways of doing it. However, in that diagram, circulators one through 5 maintain flow in the various loops. Circulator 6 takes water from the main heating loops and injects it into the floor piping system at a rate controlled by the injection mixing controller. And circulator 7 keeps the water circulating in the floor loops -- at a very different temperature from the main heating loops.
Re: Carrier
"I don't agree with this, completely. Look how man automotive giant has moved production out of their homeland. Pretty much every brand has or is building assembly plants in Mexico. BMW and Toyota assemble in the US, plenty in Canada also".
They are building plants in Mexico because of NAFTA.
"Europe had done a fine job of "learning how to manufacture" Much of our engine manufacturing and assembly technology has been borrowed from Japan and Germany".
That is not manufacturing, and confuses the issue. That is engineering. You mean the robots used on an assembly line, created by Henry Ford?
"I'm not convinced tax payers should continue to pay to keep manufacturing in the US. Seems like that is what happened with Carrier. Tax payers in Indiana got hit twice, state tax revenue going to Carrier and federal tax dollars. AND they keep their
lucrative government and defense contracts which are tax dollars".
Tax payers, and employees are one and the same.
"How many more corporations will line up for these sweetheart deals? Isn't it a thinly disguised taxpayer bailout"?
As I said in an earlier post.....Corporations have been doing it on a state and local level for at least 20 years. The deals at those levels have been poorly thought out by politicians and amounted to giving money away. We can only hope that a business-like approach will garner better results.
In answer to the rest of your post...........NAFTA

Tap 1" pipe?
I have a long run to a rad that gets downsized to 1" in the basement before traveling to the second floor. I'd like to drill and tap a 1/2" hole in the pipe and install a BnJ vent.
Is it ok to tap a 1/2" hole in a 1" pipe? Where should I make the hole? Top of pipe, side?

Re: The right boiler Best of the Best
I think forced air should be oversized. I want each cycle to be over and done with as soon as possible.

Re: The right boiler Best of the Best
@Will82 I currently have a Navien NCB in my house and have had it for 3 years now. With out a single problem with performance and reliability. For the price point it's a great unit.
If I where to do it all over again I would probably install a Lochinvar KHN or a straight high efficiency boiler. The Combi is nice but with Well water I get a bit of temp fluctuation and the wait for hot water is a bit slow for my likings. I just haven't installed hot water reticulation in yet. I've installed a handfull of KHN now and really like them. Plus having the ability to do floor mount is nice.
