Re: Retrofit Nozzle selection.
I have a 90⁰ nozzle in my box. I've never come across a burner that requires that angle myself.
Brand definitely can make a difference. One boiler I work on specifies a Hago nozzle. When I first started working on it I tried using a Delevan nozzle because that's all I had. I couldn't get it to work right and it sooted up after I did the maintenance. After two years of this happening I got sick and tired of vacuuming up a ton of soot and I tried a Hago nozzle. The boiler has been perfectly clean ever since.
Sometimes it doesn't matter what brand you use, sometimes it makes a big difference.
Re: T87F anticipator appears faulty
and then a new one three years from now… and then another new one… and then…
One of my T87s was installed, to the best of my recollection, somewhere in the early 1950s. one of the others (which was installed as a backup to a digital) around 2010, but it was NOS and who knows how old it ones.
But then I'm odd. I like things which just plain work, and keep working.
Re: How does this flow control valve work in my monoflo system?
BOTTOM LINE?
Are you experiencing a problem that needs to be solved?
All I see is a question about how it works, and wether if might still work after 70 years. I have not heard anything about a cold area or a hot area that needs of be addressed. I would say don't fix anything that ain't broke. On page 9 of this book Zoning Made Easy is an explanation of how the weighted check valve works. If it is the spring loaded one, then it has a little helper to keep it closed when the circulator is not running
Re: How does a radiator vent just fall off?
Sloppy threads. May need to drill it for a 1/4" pipe tap and retap and use a 1/4 x 1/8" bushing
Re: To switch or not to propane
Those tanks can last a long time if they are installed correctly. If you are concerned about the oil tank why don't you just replace the oil tank? You can put the tanks outside and still save space in the cellar.
Remember oil delivers a lot more BTUs per gallon than propane and where I live propane costs about the same as oil. Anyone who converts to propane here complains about spending more money to heat their home. Even when they install a high efficiency condensing boiler. Using a conversion burner on a cast iron boiler would be even worse.
Re: 24 Volt transformer blowing
@Jamie Hall have watched bot Pine Hollow and South Main Auto. Eric is the best and is a riot.
Re: Low water cutoff not working after cleaning pigtail
Cost effective for a HO who can do the work himself.
Not so much for a contractor. Liability, call back if it doesn't work and MM recommends changing after 10 years. A contractor touches it and the boiler fails its not good. Plus do you want to pay a contractor to scrape out an old control thats is over 10 years old.
Two sides to every story and neither one is right or wrong.
Re: 24 Volt transformer blowing
So do I. If you want some videos of two real pros playing with test lights, go watch South Main Auto or Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics. If you think the stuff we play with here gets complicated, watch trying to find a misbehaving circuit in a modern car…
Re: Heat exchanger between wood boiler and propane boiler?
Just to add I have had excellent luck with Badger heat exchangers as well, I pretty much replaced all the name brand sales we used to make with ones from Badger. The price is right and they last as long.
Re: Intermittent Burner ignition
" jumping the R and W proves since jumping these contacts starts the burner regardless of what the thermostat is calling for. "
An what if it does not start the burner ? Jumping the R and W, is a divide and conquer point providing troubleshooting direction.
24 VAC across R and W = No call for heat
Near 0 (zero) across R and W = Normal call for heat OR possibly no or low power to the thermostat circuit.
