Re: 24 Volt transformer blowing
@Jamie Hall have watched bot Pine Hollow and South Main Auto. Eric is the best and is a riot.
Re: Low water cutoff not working after cleaning pigtail
Cost effective for a HO who can do the work himself.
Not so much for a contractor. Liability, call back if it doesn't work and MM recommends changing after 10 years. A contractor touches it and the boiler fails its not good. Plus do you want to pay a contractor to scrape out an old control thats is over 10 years old.
Two sides to every story and neither one is right or wrong.
Re: 24 Volt transformer blowing
So do I. If you want some videos of two real pros playing with test lights, go watch South Main Auto or Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics. If you think the stuff we play with here gets complicated, watch trying to find a misbehaving circuit in a modern car…
Re: Heat exchanger between wood boiler and propane boiler?
Just to add I have had excellent luck with Badger heat exchangers as well, I pretty much replaced all the name brand sales we used to make with ones from Badger. The price is right and they last as long.
Re: Intermittent Burner ignition
" jumping the R and W proves since jumping these contacts starts the burner regardless of what the thermostat is calling for. "
An what if it does not start the burner ? Jumping the R and W, is a divide and conquer point providing troubleshooting direction.
24 VAC across R and W = No call for heat
Near 0 (zero) across R and W = Normal call for heat OR possibly no or low power to the thermostat circuit.
Re: Boiler responsible for NYCHA explosion
There is a subtle point here: the article refers to Department of Environmental Protection inspections for compliance with air pollution regulations. It points out that regular safety inspections by the Department of Buildings generally were being carried out, and had been done at Mitchell Houses four months before the explosion.
Environmental inspections would not generally cover safety issues unless there was an obvious problem with combustion.

Re: How long of a riser out of the boiler
That 24-inches is a minimum distance. Taller won't be a problem. What model boiler?
Re: How does this flow control valve work in my monoflo system?
A flow check is used if you have multiple zones, and each zone has a circulator. Or if you get domestic hot water with a tankless heater off the boiler.
If you have a zone valve system it is not required..
The screw on top should be turned clockwise in normal operation and turned counter clockwise for the open position
It is basically a weighted check valve. With no flow the weight closes the valve. When the pump starts the circulator opens the valve and moves water through the zone.
With multiple zones each zone has a flow check. The flow checks do not allow gravity flow when the circ is off (which is good).
And they allow flow only in the zone where the circ is running.
Re: Hydronic Baseboard Gap
Was he leaving some space for carpet and pad?
Or staying above the highest BX staple?
Or covering up some damaged wall above the BB?
