I don't claim to know the reason, but it is common to get corrosion where the return water, make up water and hot boiler water meet.

Not really. The gas valve locked open as a result of the electrical event keeps fuel going. That same electrical event on an oil burner would stop the fuel from pumping from the tank to the combustion chamber.

If the blower motor were turning backwards, there would be very little air movement, but it would still be in the right direction.

Not a crazy idea at all. Some commercial hot water baseboard contains one, two or three rows of element (pipe with fins).

while the pressure is as low as it is,
check the expansion tank air pressure, and check no water comes from the schrader valve, set the air pressure to 12, 14-15, that you want your water fill pressure to be,
check the tank before you add water pressure to the system.

It seems like you should get someone on site who is familiar with general hydronic heating systems. A professional willing to explain things while doing things like filling the system and bleeding air out is preferred. Or even another homeowner who has a boiler and hydronic heat, and is very familiar with their system. You are asking questions that are very basic and if you genuinely want to learn you should have someone on site helping you understand the basic principles and the devices on the system.

Im envisioning auto air vents, the chromed parts and some sort of remote thermostatic valve with a long cap tube
Any brand names on the parts?
If the system has a small leak, and fresh water keeps entering, that can corrode ferrous parts, like an expansion tank, quickly
Just some wild guesses

the nuts are not the sealing component, changing them will not accomplish anything. It is the face of the tailpiece that does the sealing, the nut just holds the tailpiece against fiber washer and valve body

the nuts are leaking because the gasket is bad. get the epdm gaskets that @hot_rod mentions.
