Re: Hartford Loop design origin
Sounds like the Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance and Inspection Company invented it.
Re: Federal catalog/brochures
Just a curious question on why you are researching all these old boilers?
Standard procedure for steam is to get the radiation load and for HW to do a heat loss as many homes have been upgraded with insulation and windows.
Not a criticism of your efforts but wondering what the value of the information is?

Leave it to the MFGs to come up with the screwball ideas just to screw everyone up.
I can remember when Scroll compressors first came out and the MFGs said basically " you don't need a CCH with a scroll they will eat liquid" Carrier junk was big on this. After they started replacing compressors they changed their tune
Re: Axeman-Anderson oil fired boiler vs. Burnham oil fired
1300 ohms is still a bit high. You usually can 800-1000
Re: dealing with twists in the pex , not staple up. I have Omega extrusions now. YAY!
I am working on my shop addition currently. I am getting beams and TJI sized. My AHJ requires a licensed engineer stamp the calcs, regardless if they are from a beam/ joist manufacturer quick sheet, or their own engineering software. It is nice to run some what-if examples before sending it off to the engineer.
It amazes me how large of an opening you can safely put in engineered I-joists!
I've been in a few homes with over-spanned or compromised floor joists. A springy floor is one of my pet peeves :(

Re: Vent placement in home 2-pipe steam heat system
First off, that asbestos insulation needs to be removed. You will need a licensed abatement company for that.
Second, the piping around the boiler is all wrong. That Carrier boiler is a re-branded Dunkirk, and Dunkirks are extremely sensitive to improper piping. The manual is here:
The steam needs to enter at one end of the header, and the drip must be at the other end. The present piping has steam coming in from two directions, which can interfere with condensate (water) drainage.
The vent in the pic is a radiator vent, which is too small. Are there vents at the ends of the steam mains?
How about a pic of a radiator that has an original shutoff valve and return fitting?
