Re: Prevent mold in mini-split heads
I've never seen a minisplit that collects water? The ceiling cassettes do but as far as I know they're uncommon.
All of the ones I've installed had a hose that runs directly outside and drains freely by gravity.

Re: Warm Start Boiler Summer Leak
is it leaking or is that condensation? doe it actually fire? if it fires only to 90 it is going to condense.
Re: Warm Start Boiler Summer Leak
Shut the boiler off completely and see if there is still a leak. That will eliminate the flue gas condensation issue. If it still has water on the floor after a week of being off then…
There are three possibilities.
- You have a leaking boiler and the higher temperature stops the leak when the metal expands to 130°. You just need to spend more on fuel
- You have a leaking boiler that can be repaired by torquing up on the connecting rods when the boiler is cold. If that stops the leak, then you can make it a cold start boiler. 90° is not such a good idea, wastes less fuel but may cause condensation of flue gas.
- You have a leaking boiler and you can get a warranty replacement block on the ten year old boiler for free. Weil McLain will not pay for the labor to remove the leaking boiler or to install the replacement boiler.
Re: Warm Start Boiler Summer Leak
Thanks that makes sense! I can turn it off for a week and see what happens - I guess that would eliminate the condensation possibility and narrow it down if I do indeed have a leak.
Re: Warm Start Boiler Summer Leak
the rubber gaskets over time get used to the temp they are working at and as they age, they lose resiliency. You upped the temp, and it stopped leaking.
If you can get a new block under warranty that is a good deal. If you can continue to use the old block and get the new one that is a better deal. I doubt they want it back but they probably have some type of verification system but I would look into that.
Chances are at 130 you will run that block for quite a while
Re: leaking return line
True… black pipe will rust out faster than copper will corrode, but unless there is some odd circumstance — such as loose weathered mortar falling on it — you should be able to get a century or so out of it.
Re: leaking return line
Do you want to pay to do this twice? Repipe in copper or steel only. The person that suggested CPVC should know better. Mad Dog
Re: I'm getting solar panels. I'll let you know how it goes in this discussion thread.
With a little effort we can turn it………..

Re: leaking return line
Copper or black pipe. You've been told and it has been explained. If you want to use plastic, you might as well use garden hose. That will be cheap and last a few years too.
Black is cheaper than copper, but with the cost of fittings and labor will be more expensive. Black pipe will last 75 years; copper maybe 75 - 100.
Most residential customers care more about their counter tops than their heating system. A conscientious pre-purchase inspection might have netted a handsome credit for the leaky returns. If it was missed b y the "inspector," you may have some recourse.
Plastic pipe will fall apart quickly and get you or your plumber called a hack.
