I am using B & G system sizer and I am getting way different #s. 4 gpm in 3/4 copper is 4.63 ft/100 feet of pipe. @286TEL' that would be 13.24' feet of head not to mention the 8 gpm he wants to get.

Quality plastic tubular waste is much more durable than brass if you don't mind the look, brass corrodes and cracks eventually, pvc usually only gets damaged if there is physical damage. it is slippery so it doesn't clog as easily either.
Can you show a close up of the fitting in the wall, all you can see of the outside and inside of it?
What kind of wase pipe is in the floor? If it is from the 20's it could be lead which is soft and brittle and pretty easy to break with an auger.
If it is steel there is a good chance it is rusted through and will start leaking somewhere.
The tile is probably on mortar on metal lath and will outlive all of us, i'd do whatever I can to keep it.

An infrared camera may work if you can run real hot or cold through the lines. It finds radiant lines very quickly.

That "wasted" steam in the dead pipe will help heat your basement if you want.
I have always put the air vents in the boiler room when possible.
The idea is to have all working/moving parts in one place and hopefully near a floor drain.

It will absolutely delay the emitters getting steam (steam can't heat both at the same time and rate as one) but that's all I'll say about it hopefully

Well….except that steam will get used to heat that "dead" part of the main, and steam will have to fill it. Therefore I think you should count it. Or even better, put your main venting before that dead part of the main.

Fighting anecdote with anecdote, here in North Jersey it's 95F at 2pm and the voltage in my outlets is 121.9
The grid is fine, updated, and constantly being improved.
