Re: Happy Easter
Whoa. No wonder no one can find good employees, they are all getting ready for the end times!
Re: Is this just a One-Pipe steam system?
Looks like they might just be unpainted cast iron.

Re: You know you're in the right career when...
I remember dreaming about boilers for six hours and then waking up and finishing the job I was dreaming about.
Re: Why boilers are still a great heating source My article for PM Magazine
Out in the Midwest there is a substantial number of wind turbines, and probably many more since the last time I was out that way. Where there is a lot of sun, one would expect more solar. The typical methods utilized to mine rare earth metals to manufacture non-recyclable components in wind turbines and solar panels with relatively short service lives are less 'green' that extracting oil and natural gas. The refrigerant manufacturing process for heat pumps, and the miles of copper involved, also cut into the 'green' equation. Short of going to Thorium based nuclear reactions and vastly upgrading the electrical distribution grid (every NIMBY hates Nuclear and throws a fit at substations, high tension wires both above and below ground), I see the current ill conceived push towards electrification as deliberate sabotage of Western economies and standards of living.
The green crowd is almost entirely made up of fundamentally unserious people literally chasing cow farts and tilting at windmills while a small Bond Villain faction takes advantage of greenwash to empower and enrich themselves at everyone else's expense.

Re: Happy Easter
This reminds me of the story of the jewish father whose son wanted to study abroad. The father consented as long as the son would study in Israel. I want you to learn about our culture, our people and our faith. The son studied in Israel and returned 4 years later. “Father, I am so happy you sent me to Israel to study”, said the son. “I learned about our culture, our people and our faith. Oh yea, By the way… I converted… I’m a christian.”
Distraught, the father went to the Rabbi and told him that his son went to Israel to learn about our culture, our people and our faith and he converted to be a christian. The Rabbi said that he too sent his son to Israel to learn about our culture, our people and our faith, and he also converted to christianity. They both went into the Temple to pray to God.
Heavenly Father, We both sent our sons to Israel to learn about our culture, our people and our faith. And they both returned after converting to christianity. What should we do? At that point… the earth shook… the windows in the temple shattered… and a voice came from the heavens (Click on Spoiler)

Re: Carrier
Continuous fan. I'd have to check the paperworks to see if it's the only-G-call-active fan, or a real continuous-no-way-to-turn-it-off-fan, ISTR it's one of the two.
I never could understand how flipping that li'l switch would make more air come out of the unit. (<- joking. I understand it, but some [cough engineers cough] seem to think that li'l switch will overcome the soda straws they like to use to move air around.)
