Re: Why boilers are still a great heating source My article for PM Magazine
I'm all for reduction, and also energy independence. Those two things seem to go hand in hand.
We've already had a century for electrification..... BUT apparently fuel was too cheap and/or electricity too expensive for the masses to see the value.
Something has to change, and it seems scare tactics are taking hold.

Re: How does a 45-degree Elbow Work?
I can't help it. When ever I hear of a heating system "humming" or "whistling" I have to tell my customer the reason is because it forgot the words. If you can put the sheet music in plain view of the radiator, perhaps the whistling will stop.
As far as getting the other noise to stop. Perhaps if you were to place your rent or co-op or condo fee in a lawyer's escrow account until management can abate the noise, you may find that the money (or lack there of) will get action sooner than later. Find a lawyer that knows the law for your situation. And document everything phone call text message email and letter. The best paper trail usually wins the case. According to Judge Judy anyway and really... the bottom line is that all you want is "Quiet Enjoyment" of your home. ...and that banging noise from old steamers kinda goes against the QUIET part of that legal term

Re: retrofitting 1952 single loop boiler
This appears to have a 1-1/2" x 3/4" (or 1/2" to smaller radiators) diverter tee system by the looks of that last tee before the elbow down the the circulator pump. I would caution against moving or adding new radiators to that system. If there are any renovations or additions to the system that require additional radiators, I woulds connect any new heat emitters (radiators) to a separate zone on a separate circulator. The Dead Man that did all the math on sizing those radiators and diverter tees that have worked well for the past 60+ years will not like it if you mess with his work, and may just come back from the Dead to make sure you are uncomfortable.
Pictures of the radiators or heat emitters will help to determine if a small adjustment to the radiator location or adding or removing just one of them will cause any problems. But that said, if you add a Modulating, Condensing boiler (ModCon) to that system and scrap the old Janitrol "Ships Anchor", you will realize a much lower operating cost.
Best of Luck with the project.
Mr. Ed

Re: 3" CAST IRON PIPES REPLACE WITH COPPER OR PEX?
Who told you that you were allowed to THINK?Pictures please so we can get a better idea of your configuration.I wouldn't call them unusual. I think every hot water system in every old house in my whole county used to be steam.PS: Steam to hot water conversions are unusual and often ended with unhappy homeowners. .

And no one has suggested taping an air vent in the top center of the rad??

Re: You know you're in the right career when...
One time I was dreaming of work, I looked over my first wife (who sadly died of Breast Cancer at age of 48, in July of 2005)
I told her to get in the ditch & man that shovel, she told me in the morning, she had never heard me talk that way to anyone. She said if there was ditch in the bedroom, she would have jumped in it !

You sure do hate renters eh?a gas or diesel powered automobile uses fossil fuels, and that affects the environment. An EV (electric vehicle) doesn't.
I wrote this article...
"A boiler uses fossil fuels, and that affects the environment. A heat pump doesn't," another person says.
I think you should edit the title of the article from educating young minds to deprogramming young minds. I wonder how many boiler haters are renters and have no clue about real world cost and maintenance of such things.
