Re: Balancing
ha good point. The real question i'm asking myself is do i replace/repair existing zone valves or do i remove them completely? The care taker of church claims those zones pictured haven't worked in years (then again he may not know a dam thing) Don't you love neglected systems with no record of anything!?
Re: A Casual Survey: Homeowner GC'ing their job
People don't plan to fail, they just fail to plan.
When I was a young engineer in the '90's, "Total Quality Management" was a popular corporate thing, so we got a TQM seminar. One case study in the seminar was a comparison of two new factories, one built in the US and one built in Japan. The US method was to design and break ground as quickly as possible. But the fast design process meant many of the mechanical details (HVAC routing, etc) were left out of the prints. And as a result, construction was slow as many details had to be worked out by the subs on site, and a lot of rework and change orders. By contrast, the Japanese spent much more time up front on the factory design, down to the routing of all mechanicals, etc, so that when they broke ground, there was no conflict between subs, little or no rework/change orders, and despite taking much longer to break ground, the factory ultimately got built faster.

Re: When to NOT use sharkbite? A question
Any plumber that says "I never get leaks, Bro!!' Is a LIAR. When your soft-Soldering up tens of thousands of joints up to 4" there will be some leaks in tight spots. This is human error, not the joining system. Mad Dog
Re: Your favorite Heating Help questions
And I forgot to list another recent favorite:
"Can I use Teflon tape on my oil lines?"

Re: Your favorite Heating Help questions
The answer is always "Yes, if you need more BTU's than a hair dryer puts out to heat your house!"
I realize that right now this includes me and most of the Western world, but hopefully someday we'll have much better insulated housing construction.

250K Steam boiler with a drop header and all new NBP………………..extended stay job.😁

Re: When to NOT use sharkbite? A question
This is actually the reason I don't much care for sharkbites, o rings eventually fail, but technology keeps getting better and sometimes the old ways are not the best ways. As much as my life is characterized by old ways I have to be careful not to push where I haven't researched. I've talked to quite a few men who do some plumbing (contractors and light duty plumbing) and they all seem to have good success with sharkbites. I just don't see enough evidence to advise against it, sure it hasn't had the opportunity to fail the test of time yet, but it certainly has enough support to be a quality product. I am not a plumber, by any means, I've probably only sweated 100 joints but to me this is a pretty big gray area. Sorry for the long post, but the technical industry is highly lacking technical training and technical detailed talk. Which is what is going on here, I love the read!

I know the earth isn't flat. If it were, my cat would have pushed everything off the edge long since.
Re: Calling Peerless 63-series Owners: A Venting Mystery
Yep that's them.
Oswald doesn't stock this stuff and won't drop ship from PTYD if the order is < $25 and PTYD said "5-7 days" upon request, and then got back to me and said, we out & we ain't makin' any.
And they wanted to know what happened to the original, and what was I thought I was doing:
"Production would like to know what the serial number is of this unit. Also, what is the reason for replacing this and what caused it?"
Now PTYD sort of "is" Peerless, and that Peerless isn't talking to me, officially, so it's not like i can call the engineers and ask what they think they're doing.
