Re: New Build
In terms of "keep it simple," these systems have to be designed. There aren't rules of thumb you can follow that will guarantee a satisfactory result. Rather, we get people here all the time with systems that don't work well because they were never designed.
The three biggest sources of dissatisfaction:
- The floor can't put out enough heat to keep the building warm. A subset of this is that the floor can put out enough heat, but only when it's uncomfortably hot.
- The floor can't change its heat output quickly enough to keep up with changes in the heating load, so it overshoots and undershoots the desired temperature.
- The floor puts out enough heat to keep the building warm, but at such a low temperature that the floor isn't noticeably warm and doesn't give the "toasty toes" feeling that was expected.
These are all things that can be predicted at design time, if the system is designed.
Re: grohe smart " stupid box"
the valve is desighed to let some water drip from the tub spout while the shower is running. at least that is what i was told by tech support

Re: Single pipe radiator
You can hook it up 2 pipe. Just drop the return from the rad down in the basement and make a water seal come back up into the main. The drop to the water sealhas to be the right length in relation to the steam pressure. No trap needed.
Re: Trimo pipe wrench history
This blog shows the location of the Trimont factory, with a photo of the building as it looks today. Next time I'm in Roxbury I'll try to find it.

Re: Stadler radiant heat loop always circulating
RST Thermal got back to me and will take a look through their archives next week for Stadler documentation.
Thanks for the support.

Re: Replumbing: Solder or Threads for Ball Valves
I used a 5/8 / 1/2 flare to 1/2 ips for that reason last time i ran in to this situation. maybe i posted a picture above 2 years ago when tis thread was new

Re: Observations on my old, rotted out wet return.
Whatever. As long as one understands the absolutely critical differences in the way they function and how they must be piped, no problem.
Not enough people do… and a remarkable number of knuckleheaded systems, with interesting and sometimes very difficult to diagnose problems result.
I might add that i have pretty well given up the battle. If I see a system with incorrectly piped whatever you want to call thems, I'll mention it — once. And then let the poor folks trying to figure what's wrong have at it.
Re: The "equalizer" is mis-named. It does nothing to equalize anything.
@delcrossv thank you! I was hoping to use the two 90s had. Guess will have to buy 45s ;)
Re: Single pipe radiator
@delcrossv, I was hoping there was some long lost ancient steam secret that would unlock my hopes.😂
Re: Single pipe radiator
Need some pitch. The takeoff from the end of the main pretty much guarantees water in the lateral.
Is that main counterflow? If not, it needs to go to a drip or crossover trap- not a supply line.
If you're feeling frisky, repipe it as 2 pipe like the rest of the system. 😉
