Re: Skimming a new boiler - Frequency?
This is JMHO but skimming without washing soda to me is like putting clothes in a washing machine without any soap and expecting things to come out clean.
Re: Rheem Hybrid water heater changing operating modes on its own.
I've tried to explain this in the past, and people seem to purposely refuse to think about what I say, but I'll try it again. It doesn’t cool off your basement or dry it out in any measurable way. This is why I leave my basement windows cracked open a smidge all winter. That doesn't cool off my basement in any measurable way either.
I should probably get better at measuring though.
Your basement is losing a lot of heat. Every wall, every window, is losing a lot of heat. Whether you have a heat pump down there or not, a lot of heat is leaving. Now what happens is the heat pump grabs some of that heat, which was going to be lost anyway, and puts it into its tank.
And by the way, your atmospheric water heater is pulling $h!t-tons of heat right up the flue 24/7 which you can close off if you exchange it for a heat pump water heater, but no one seems to remember that.
Re: Air to Water Heatpump scenario for my abode.
OK, I updated it to use Cleveland-Hopkins as the weather station. Looks very similar to Boston. Sheet is at:
I didn't change anything else. Let me know if there are any assumptions that aren't right.
Re: (Updated with pictures.) Likely gas leak after installing new thermocouple?
As Mr. Weingarten says, the pilot line is probably cracked. It's aluminum. Put some soapy water on it and see if it blows bubbles. That will find your leak.
If you diagnose the problem, a serviceman may be easier to secure if you can tell them before time what they have to fix.
Re: (Updated with pictures.) Likely gas leak after installing new thermocouple?
Who changed the thermocouple? If this was a DIY replacement, then the person that did the replacement is not qualified to work on a gas fire that is inside your home. A basic understanding of how houses can burn down from a out of control gas flame is needed before you can safely work on any gas piping, tubing or controls.
If you feel that you can do a better job than the guy that incorrectly replaced the thermocouple, then you will need some parts to replace the aluminum tube that runs from the gas valve to the pilot burner. This Pilot tube kit is easier to work with than the 1/4" ones. You will want to check the pilot burner while you have it out of the boiler. if the pilot orifice is partially plugged then you will need to replace that also. I will need to see a picture of the pilot burner to recommend a replacement pilot orifice or complete pilot burner replacement. But many times all that is needed is to clean the pilot burner by soaking it in alcohol or brake cleaner and blowing it completely dry before reinstalling the pilot tube tightly. If it is loose then the gas will leak out where it is not supposed to and may cause a fire to happen where you don't want a fire to happen.
After you have the thermocouple and pilot tube attached to the pilot burner you can put the pilot burner back in place on the boiler’s main burner. Once the pilot burner is properly installed on the main burner you then take the other end of the ⅛” pilot tube and connect it to the gas valve pilot port, and the other end of the thermocouple to the thermocouple port of the gas valve.
I hope this helps get your pilot and thermocouple back in order

Re: EK System 2000 Issue with 007e circulator
Appreciate it. I think I am going to try switching the pump (once this cold snap passes NY). I feel pretty confident that its the circulator thats acting up…. However, not withstanding I will send pictures in case you think its something else. As I said the technician (person how installed original system) not the new zone suggested I properly pipe the radiators (which I will do in the spring).
Re: EK System 2000 Issue with 007e circulator
@Resipsa88, We don't have a check in the oo7E on the system 2k. I'd be happy to look into your issue for you. Pm Me with some system pictures and we can work on figuring out what's going on for you.

Re: Air to water heat pump system design
A COP of over 4 is easy to achieve. I graduated from the Heat Geeks Mastery courses. It is three courses and over 100 hours of training. I also have many other certifications in hydronics and radiant heating. I have over 40 years of training. I train, design and consult for installers of ATWHP systems for a living now. Adam Chapman (Founder of Heat Geeks Engineers) says in the video below "The main variable for Heat Pump performance is installer training" I can help you achieve a SCOP of over 4 with proper training. This is not possible with older houses that have existing radiation and need higher temps. I am training Americans on the East Coast right now!!
2010 U.K. national average 2.4 SCOP
2017 U.K. national average 2.6 SCOP
2024 U.K. national average 2.8 SCOP
Heat Geek graduates out of a 107 installers field measured and verified by installed monitoring equipment.
Heat Geek average 4.15 SCOP
Heat Geek Elite 4.55 SCOP

Re: (Updated with pictures.) Likely gas leak after installing new thermocouple?
Hi, Others will know better, but it sounds like the small (probably aluminum) tube that supplies gas to the pilot got damaged. It's not that big a job to simply replace that tube as long as you can get to both ends. You will need the right fittings for the ends of it.
Yours, Larry
