Re: Added Vents, Lost Heat?
B4 you use the 2x 4 start at the boiler end and figure out which way the pipes need to pitch and use a level.but that return at the end of the main can't pitch right because of the way it is piped
Your technician who installed the vents and the new near boiler piping should have gone through the system and figured this all out

Re: Is the LAARS FT MFTCW140NA2XN any good? Any way to determine manufacture date?
They're okay. Not great, but not terrible either. I know we're not supposed to discuss pricing but this is public knowledge so I'll say that you can pick that boiler up new for under $2k. Unless it's $1000 or less, I'd pass knowing it was most likely abused pretty badly in its short life based on the fact that it was removed from service. For $1k it may be worth the gamble with a 10 year life expectancy.

Re: What is this vent?

at least from 1929 and mentioned in catalogs up to 1953.. that I was able to google
no specific information found though
There are photos and descriptions in this catalog, but can only preview tidbits.

Says new york public library digitized, but I couldn't find it on their website.
Guess you have to request it https://legacycatalog.nypl.org/record=b11974017~S1

Re: Watts radiant onix tubing...rip out?
If the circulator runs its not a transformer. The relay should tell you that. Hopefully the service guy could see that.
When he purged the system did he open up the flow checks? I had that happen to me in an onix system last month... it was stuck shut. He would need to open up the set screw on top of each one. They are the green things on the supply going out.

Re: Lost wrench for the Lost Art
I used to have a 150 year old 8 foot chain tongs...Hung it in the barn...Awesome. The largest screw pipe I ever did was 12" in Rockefeller Center Mechanical Floors fire line. 40 feet in the air. Two of us had to screw on a tee by hand. Then used a Ridgid Compound Wrench...anyone ever use one? Mad Dog 🐕
Re: Closed Loop Water Storage Tank Lifespan
Hi, An approach I've used successfully is to use a large plastic tank, essentially for heat storage, and then use copper coils high and low to put heat into the water or remove it. This way you can have a long-lived tank, but not under pressure.

Re: How to add pressure to boiler system?
In your second picture down there is a yellow handle valve to the left and below the expansion tank in the horizontal 1/2" copper pipe. The valve looks like it is closed. Open it until you get 12-15 psi on the boiler gauge then close it.
Not the yellow handle valve to the left in the larger vertical pipe.
You need to find out where the water is going. If you keep losing water and adding new water that is not good for the boiler
