Re: Its on every plumbing exam.......
In the wholesale world we must know the correct technical name, as well as the nickname each contractor uses for each item. It gets a bit confusing to say the least, but at the end of the day everyone knows the nickname for a gas riser and that's all that really counts 😂

Re: Its on every plumbing exam.......
some nicknames and exceptional branding/marketing
sammy screws (rod anchors, sammy is a brand)
kindorf/kindorf clamps (slotted strut channel, strut clamps, kindorf is a brand)
pipe rest (riser clamp)
loop hanger, sprinkler hanger, swivel hanger
fish plate, ceiling plate, hanger plate, square plate
union (actually wants coupling, for the spanish speaking folk)
black pipe (actually wants nh pipe)
nh tee wye (sanitary tee, though some guys actually want a wye which is why anyone who asks for a tee wye I have ask tee or wye.)
teflon (ptfe tape, teflon is a brand)
johni-bolts (closet bolts)
mission coupling (transition coupling, mission is a brand)
offset wrench (wants end wrench)
fernco coupling (flexible rubber cplg, fernco is a brand)
sawzall/sawzall blades (reciprocating saw/blades, sawzall is a Milwaukee trademark)
silver solder (wants sterling solder, contains no silver) unless it's an hvac guy, then stay-brite it is.
the trap with the threads at the end (milwaukee/utility trap)
the fitting with the 2" on the side (side outlet elbow)
shemale (extension cplg)
At the end of the day, all that matters is that you understood.
not nicknames but common mistakes
Not reading a reducing tee correctly, larger size run x run x bull.
Sweat reducing male/female adapters should read sweat size first, then thread size.
Not knowing ID/OD plumbing/hvac and understanding how you should order depending on if you are in a plumbing or hvac supply. unless ordering 1/4 and 3/8 refrigeration coils/compression fittings, then plumbers also use OD.
Not knowing caulk vs silicone
Angle danfoss radiator valves when pipe is coming up from the ground, should use side mount valves.

Re: vent damper question. Does it have to go vertical right off the top of the boiler?
Well, I've never seen a boiler manual that says NOT to move the damper to a horizontal position. If there is such a thing out there, I'd appreciate seeing it.
If a building is old enough to have gravity hot-water heat, it's also old enough to have had a coal-fired boiler. Chimneys used with coal boilers had to develop a lot of draft to pull air through the bed of coal on the grate. Some of these chimneys could probably pull pets and small children up to the roof. This level of draft is way too much for oil or gas burners, which is why we have draft hoods and barometric draft regulators.
Perhaps this explains why, when we see an elbow on top of a draft hood, there's never a drafting issue. If there was, the combustion test would reveal it.

Re: Buying fittings online
First Blackman purged all their excellent counter men, like Gene from Mineola, then they sold to Ferguson. Tried them twice...Terrible experience. Not the best & Brightest at the counter. F.W. Webb is a completely different experience. They have the massive buying power and corporate structure, but from What I've seen so far in NY is that they hire seasoned pros...and treat you like a Mom & Pop Supply house down on Main Street.
This is also happening with the small and medium Non-Union & Some Union shops. Being absorbed...Not good for competition and choice because once they put the mom & pop out, they are the Goliath left standing and you're stuck with em. Mad Dog 🐕

Re: Burnham MPO-IQ84 oil water boiler
Never a fan of any pin boiler. Even the American Standard's from the 1960s. The clean out brush would get stuck between the pins. More than once I have had to cut off and abandon a clean-out brush inside a boiler. Maybe next year I can pull it out, after a year of baking in that flue passage. Great idea for absorbing more heat from the flue gasses. Lousy idea for maintenance. There's a lot to be said for the triple-pass boilers like the Buderus and EK. If I ever need to replace my WM WGO-5 (at age 71, it will likely outlast me), I'd probably go with an EK-everything I've heard about them is really positive.
I liked the Buderus with the big front door for the chamber and the flue maintenance.
Never installed an EK boiler until one of my former competitors changed from oil to gas and removed the EK System 2000. I got it for free and installed it for one of the gal’s that worked for me. When I saw the process and the design I was sold on the concept. Too bad for Roger I sold my business and retired soon after that.
You can keep WM gold and Utica and all the rest. The Crown Freeport and Freeport 2 were much easier to clean. Almost like the old coal conversions from back in the day.
Re: Old church, stained glass windows, weird steam heating loop.
I think these modern speakers should be covered over or removed. They don't go with the period furnishings and appointments.
Just paint the pipes. Those pipes are old anyway. They are a better match than the speakers

Re: Spud removal, cut the thread. Am I sunk?
If anyone sees a bushing like this check to confirm the large thread is right-hand before going any further.I assumed it's a L-R bushing. I've done this several times, having learned twice the hard way years ago, and went with a L-R nipple to get it back together.
I've also patched cut threads with ProPoxy20, waited a day, and ran a tap through the threads. So far so good.
