Re: An interesting generator connection
My wife can pull it out of the crawl space, plug it in connect the gas hose and start ithot_rod said:You still are responsible for shutting down unnecessary circuits. Not something I’d want my wife to do.But you wife can start the generator?I’ll stick with a transfer switch and outside plug!
She can also flip the interlock and turn the main off and generator on.
My 8500 Watt generator has no issues powering the entire house minus the central air. It'll do that too with a little care.
I have no problems with my wife handling this when I'm not home. She's more than capable.

Re: Seeking Guidance on Rebuilding Chimney Conduit after Foundation Repairs
Building and rebuilding chimneys is not a DIY project. Leave it to the pros. Nobody can teach you how to do this online. What you do need is a professional Level II inspection, which will determine what will be needed to make the repairs. Keep in mind the chimney will need to be relined to be used. As noted, the expense of making these repairs might be better served by putting it towards high efficiency equipment that does not need a chimney. However, if you're contemplating a wood, gas or pellet stove, they each have their own special venting requirements. See your local chimney pro.

I knew something had to be up! Glad you're OK, Ray!
Re: Lost wrench for the Lost Art
Moore Drop Forge used to make all the Craftsmen wrenches. I will have to take a look for that sculpture it's only about 5 miles from me.
I can remember we (the oil company I worked for) delivered fuel oil to Moore drop forge in the 70s
Springfield was a huge manufacturing area at one time.
The Bemis & Call building looks the same as it always did and is still standing. Last I knew it housed EB Atmus that sells bearings and other power transmission equipment.
Springfield Armory-firearms. they have a museum here.
STCC Springfield Technical Community College has had there "Heat & Power Course" which I graduated from in 1972 has put a lot of technicians into the heating and air conditioning business and related trades was started in 1966 after the government closed the armory.
Moore Drop Forge
Smith and Wesson-just moved to Tenn. but still some here.
Gilbert & Barker Oil burners and gas pumps...moved south in the 60s
Harvey Whipple Oil burners
Duryea cars
Rex Chain belt
HB Smith Boilers (Westfield)
Van Norman machine
Indian Motor Cycle (closed 1953
I am sure there are many more that I missed. + there were tons of small businesses that supported these companies

Re: Derating and/or 2-Stage Steam Boiler for Mouat
How long has the boiler been installed? Still in Warranty? Depending on the situation, I have sometimes taken on the Full Responsibility for a situation like this because NO ONE wants to make a move and the Homeowner is stuck in a Horrible position where no one will step in Nx hwoo him..not the Rep , The Manufacturers, The original installer, et al. They are abandoned to suffer with a bad install & noisy system that costs them a small fortune to run 🏃♂️.
I got tired of the smoke & mirrors and evasiveness of all involved. I got tired of hearing : " But you'll void the Warranty...this will become YOUR Waterloo...You'll be married to this job!!!. It already was and The Homeowner kept calling ME to help him. Tired of the Namby-Pamby nonsense, I just set it to fix it. To this day, those problem Headache jobs are humming along, and they got my name on em...The Buck Stops Here! Fine with that. Mad Dog 🐕

Re: These LGB's suffered
Definitely too much Mu water killed those boilers. Nothing will kill a boiler and plug up the returns like Mu water. Too bad they ignored it.
Finally, the boiler plugs with sludge, the LWCOs fail because of sludge.
As my old boss used to say. "you can't burn up a section with water in it"

Re: These LGB's suffered
Nice work. Hopefully the owners learned a lesson about maintenance and will retain you to care for their new equipment.
