Re: Old NYC radiator help
@Jamie Hall is right but I'll add a little description to his direction to "just turn it over". If possible, you would rotate the vent one way or the other as possible (righty-tighty would be preferable but may not be possible) until the vent is upside-down from its current position.
This effectively "closes" this type of vent so that it doesn't let the air out next time the boiler calls for heat.
In between calls for heat, the whole system fills back up with air (all the steam condenses) and the vents let the air out when the next call for heat occurs.
But in this cold weather we currently have, they might be running the boiler nearly continuously and this trick only works if the system can fill back up with air between calls for heat...once the system is completely steam filled, you can't stop it.

Re: Need help with Primary/Secondary Water Loops
Once you have flow in all the zones, the air separator will finish off the job of getting dissolved air out. It could take days.
Leave the fill valve open for a period of time to add water as the remainder of the air comes out.

Re: Hoffman 2 Vents?
WIKA wouldn't lie ...

Honestly I was sure it was 10" Hg but after reviewing the picture and seeing 11" on the gauge I just could not resist

The Silent Steam Team video of the Hoffman #2 salesman demonstration device video is quite instructive.ymmvHoffman #2 Vacuum Steam Vent 1920s Demonstrator

Re: Hoffman 2 Vents?
This is from the Hoffman Specialty Catalog for the Number 2 Vent.
"In systems using oil or gas burners, the number of operations of the burner per day is reduced about 25 per cent through the use of No. 2 Hoffman Vacuum Valves on the radiators and No. 6 or No. 16 valves on the pipe lines. In coal burning systems reduction in fuel consumption of 33 1/3 per cent is common."
They mention the number of burner operations is reduced about 25% per day. There is no mention as to what the reduction of total burn time is reduced per day.

Re: New Weil Boiler
Hey Triad my baseboard has a knob you can turn in the center of the top of baseboard which lowers and raises a full length damper. The knob turns a concentric ring with an arm that raises and lowers the damper. The damper is at the top of my baseboard and moves down to close the holes and up to open the holes at the top.

Snowmelt timelapse
I put together a snowmelt system back in june for my house in Colorado. We finally got some snow so i was able to try it out and i can report that my DIY project works, and works well i believe. My house faces north so it never gets any sun and was turning my sloped driveway into an ice rink. My wife fell once, i fell, but when the chinese food delivery guy fell that was the last straw so i started researching heated driveways. Through my research, mostly on here and Chris Deckers youtube i learned electric was not the way to go so I decided on hydronic. Anyways, thank you for all the information i found searching this site while i was building the system.

Here is the finished product. Its been running for about a week now. All the air bled out after 2-3 days and it is working flawlessly. The only pain was when I went to turn the boiler on for the 1st time it flashed a bunch of error codes at me. Turns out it was too cold to turn on (25F). Popped a space heater in it for a couple hours and it fired right up.
Thanks for all the help guys. You gave me the confidence to undertake this project myself.

Re: Riello noise
Oh, you're the guy from the other thread. If you need to replace the burner on a beautiful setup like a Buderus G115 with a Riello, then it's not the burner that needs to go, it's the service company. Are they aware it's not 1990 anymore?Northerners123 said:I’m wondering what that is? The burner is 10 years old. I am considering a Beckett to replace it they’re more common and practical for the oil service company.

Re: Beckett to replace Riello?
It's 2024. If a residential oil tech doesn't have Riello 40 parts on the truck, they shouldn't have a truck.
And if they can't handle Riello, they sure won't be able to handle an NX.
