Re: Main vent hissing steam at end of cycle on new Gorton #1 vent
Your vent is installed in the condensate stream . A dry location would be tapped on the top of the main , past the last radiator and before it drops down to the return . It looks like your main was extended from that connection ?

Re: steam system tour
Two points:
1- Instead of rebuilding the crossover traps, replace them with Barnes & Jones Big Mouth Crossover traps. These will vent air from the mains much more quickly, and should reduce the boiler's running time.
2- The third floor radiator was probably replaced at some point. Notice the pipe extensions between the radiator and the valve, and between the radiator and the trap. The original was probably a Corto, and the present rad was a bit narrower.
Re: T87F anticipator appears faulty
Ah. But a flaw — a minor one — in your logic. The current through the anticipator is not set by the anticipator — it is determined by the device being controlled. The actual resistance of the anticipator affects the current flow only slightly. So… the longer the path through the anticipator element, the greater the heat being generatred — and the quicker the anticipation.
Here is a good article on them…
Re: Ancient boiler HELP!
Your Coal conversion to Gas may have an antique gas burner. You may just need a simple part replacement that has nothing to do with steam. Call your gas company and see it they have service people that can help you. I like to think of it this way. If your gas burner is not burning any gas, the gas company is not making any money selling any gas. It is in their best interest to get your heater working.
Re: Ancient boiler HELP!
@Rina, you're not getting a modern gas power burner installed without major fabrication to the burner door. Did you send pics to the heating, plumbing, and mechanical places? If so, maybe thats why the lack of feedback. Below is an example of a modern power burner. You can see the difference in the big rectangle opening in the existing burner compared to the round air tube on a modern power burner.
Having a burner that has "GYROSCOPIC - BALANCE" is really awesome, but maybe it's time to upgrade the whole system. Then I'm sure they'll all come knocking.

Re: Heat loss calculation for rooms with high base temperature
You mix low and high mass radiant if you run a decent outdoor reset curve. With stable water temps, the emitter response becomes less of an issue.
