Re: Restoring One Pipe -- finally
If you sized the boiler correctly you'll never need a vaporstat, just the crude pressuretrol that came with the boiler.
Do you expect it to build excessive pressure?

Re: Grateful for help recovering from rash changes to steam vent orifices!
i sujspect the roof insulation has screwed yp the balance, you now need less venting up top. The nice thing about Maid o Mist is you can just swap orifices not the entire vent. You can even buy packs of the orufices that give you a convenient way to balance your system.

Re: Line voltage at thermostat
When I have tested both thermostats, the heat would kick on when I turned it up, and kick off when I turn it down. I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get a heating guy to rewire it properly. If it was a simple run a new line thing I'd give it a go but I have a feeling I'm gonna have to go into the relays and boiler and disturb things that haven't been disturbed in as long time. Plus whenever I mess with wiring I sleep with one eye open for a month and I'm getting too old to deal. Thanks for all the advice. 👍
Re: Triangle Tube Ceasing Operations
This is quite a surprise. I'm sad to see them go. Why couldn't it be Navien instead?
I really liked most of their boilers, the fire tube heat exchangers are easy enough to clean. Triangle Tubes controls were easy to use. I never had any problems with them.
The amount of stuff involved in correcting the recall was kinda ridiculous.
Re: Downspout drains underground under brick patio — no backup, but no water at exit either
Is there step flashing under the shingles that goes up under the siding? There should be an L shaped piece of flashing under each shingle that goes up under the siding. There should then be pieces of flashing at the end that brings that water out over the fascia instead of behind the siding. None of that is new, thinking like water and directing it out has been around for hundreds of years.
My bet would be on the water leaking down through that whole joint and down through the wall.
Re: Need new boiler
About all you can do is a visual inspection. No leaks you run it until it does, or you can't get parts.
Lack of qualified technicians is an issue.
If they can't fix the old boiler or don't want to just because its old what do, they do when they install a new boiler, they know nothing about? Cross their fingers and hope it starts and have tech support on speed dial.
That's not a real technician.
Re: Replace an aging Beckett RWB oil burner?
10.7% O2 on that combustion test seems ridiculously high. I normally find a true zero smoke at around 4-6% O2.
Re: Line voltage at thermostat
The wires may go to something that looks like this.
You need a high limit to measure the boiler temperature and shut off the burner if the boiler water temperature gets too high.
Re: Line voltage at thermostat
Has the presents of line voltage at the thermostat been verified or did someone just use a line voltage type thermostat on a 24 VAC system ?
Re: 1895 Detroit Home - Single Pipe Steam Unknown Condition - Initial Inspection
The system is likely ok but everything about how that boiler is installed is wrong.
