Re: Old HP system failed: new refrigerant choice? new equipment reliability?
I am at an age where the cost of labor and material seems way out of wack.
But, I also ran my own business for 8 years back in the 80s-90s. Things add up real fast.
I just went through this myself. I needed a new storm door which an Anderson is about $400. Got a quote from a contractor who wanted $1100. I thought it was really high so I did it myself.
- Go to lumberyard and order door & wait 10 days for it to show up.
- Remove tools & stuff from truck to make room for door. (truck has a truck cap) and lug tools to basement.
- Pick up door at lumberyard
- Remove old door
- Install new door
- Cut up old door and take to metal scrap yard. $15.50
- Put tools back in truck, lug them up from basement.
Yeah maybe a contractor would not have to go through all those steps.
But he has a truck, tools, liability insurance, workers comp, overhead , profit and truck insurance.
Somebody has to pay for that stuff.
$1100. was probably not an unreasonable price
No one should bash a contractors price without analyzing it.
Try it yourself.
Re: Replacing large steel pipes going to/from hot water boiler to cast iron radiators with PEX
Think about how you're going to join on to the riser before you cut it and where you have space to cut out the remnants of a pipe or cut off a fitting by scoring and splitting or shattering it if it doesn't unscrew, make sure you are working someplace where you have room to work.
Re: Radiant heating pump relay
Actuators with end switches on each manifold port would give you complete control. If multiple loops go to one zone, connect thje actuators to one t-stat.
You need a ZVC control and actuators for the manifold

Re: J.P. Ward
I hope not. Ive only used Ward fittings for near boiler piping and oil tanks.
Re: Trane Air Handler Fan Constantly Running
i think it is more or less the dotted wiring on the schematic, with some of the wires different colors and the wires junctioned on the start cap rather than the run cap.
Re: filter size
What else do you plan on doing? And do you have the right tools/skills to do it properly? Especially proper bleeding and settin up combustion?
Why is it leaking? Was the previous one installed incorrectly? Is it leaking out the bleeder screw?
It’s a General 1A-25a, or better 1A-25b bio rated.
Re: Trane Air Handler Fan Constantly Running
@EdTheHeaterMan , all we carry is the Turbo 200, 200X, and Mini. There's too many to stock individuals. The big ones don't typically fit the original strap, so I always have a roll of vinyl Band Iron, or as some call, Plumbers Roll.

Re: solo 110
What is the pressure reading on the boiler? Assuming you have a working, accurate gauge somewhere. A spinning circ with no water is a concern.

Re: Who owns who?
Cordless power tool? DeWalt. Been using them for decades. So far, I have not noticed any cheaping out.
