Re: I'm getting solar panels. I'll let you know how it goes in this discussion thread.
Pretty house, like your flower boxes. Keeping the upper level window boxes water have proven to be a challenge for us. 😉

Re: Co-op in Brooklyn looking for steam consultant, 120 unit, single pipe, 1950s building
To all, This is the last I will comment on this power issue not related to steam. Please pardon me if I seem a bit frustrated. Among my many duties I served as an instructor. Did I say 8 volts or 8 percent? Did I say that I was interested in New Jersey [Which I worked for 10 years at T Mobile in the field] or any other utility? My concerns were for those steam heating systems in Coops which are most likely commercial boilers and more than 25 units and 5 floors or more in New York. It is my understanding that more than 70 percent of the buildings in New York use steam heating. Those of you in this class of buildings should do your due diligence.
Re: Help Sizing A Multi-Zone Mini Split System - Minimum Capacity?
Mitsubishi did a good job of putting it into plain English. start with a load calc, size the ODU based on the load, put multiple small load rooms on a ducted unit, add 1:1 units if needed. These are sentiments shared by the manufacturer I deal with as well.
"The outdoor unit should not be selected based on how many indoor units are desired. If the outdoor unit is oversized just to provide a certain number of indoor units for each of the zones, overheating, humidity issues, and higher than expected energy usage can occur"
Re: Does any one know who manufacture's the mini-splits sold as Mountman?
Refrigerant for extended line sets are weighed in in oz. according to line set length. If the manual doesn't provide that data sheet, I wouldn’t even consider purchasing the product. Why Mountman? Because its on Amazon? Because its cheap? Because of their excellent tech support? Because parts availability is plentiful and handling warranty items is not a PITA at all? Because the customer already has a Mountman portable swamp cooler and its wicked awesome? Penny wise, pound foolish comes to mind with this.
Maybe Mountman is great. I don’t know. I do know if I want to sign up for their email, I need to know Chinese. I can't even tell if its Mandarin or Cantonese.
You've been an HVAC pro 54 years. I'm assuming the customer has been an HVAC pro for zero years. Can't you talk sense to them? It starts with Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, Bosch, and goes down from there. And if their second choice is MR. COOL, run. Run as fast as you can.

Re: Trane ac air handler
Ed,
I assume I can replace it then with the RLY02807? Looks like that has the time delay board built in. I think that is the way to go, looks like they’re under $100. I’ll just have to figure out the wiring.
Re: boiler replacment opinion on the West Coast
I have the same setup as you are suggesting except my Viessmann (V.) is a 100 series. No need for the 200 unless you have lots of peripheral equipment (mixing valves, solar, etc.).
I service many V. boilers in the City, East Bay, Marin and South Bay and stock the most common replacement parts as, unfortunately, parts are not available locally. I urge my customers to stock these parts there, with the boiler in case I run out or if they call in someone else for repairs.
The 120 gallon indirect sounds too big for you. I’d go with the 80 gallon. V. has the best stainless indirects. None of the ones I’ve installed over the last 40 years have failed.
Lochinvar also makes a great boiler and they, along with V. have good technical support.
Edit:
"In looking back and with current research it seems my installer did not account for the value of stored thermal mass even though I have a decent size mechanical room."
Stored thermal mass? I don't understand.
"I’m also considering 2-3 solar thermal panels now or in the future."
Oh, I see. The solar add on is why you wanted the 200 Vitodens. I'd skip the solar thermal. Too expensive to maintain and repair. Solar electric is a better option.
Re: Boiler Header?
Depends on your craftsmanship and ability to source components. If you can find the correct components and your design and craftsmanship are up to what Caleffi or some others can do, yours and pre-made will be equal. Yours will probably be more expensive, quality for quality.
Re: boiler replacment opinion on the West Coast
Air to water heat pumps are common in that area, climate is a good match, incentives are available.
Corey Page posts a lot of HP conversation on his IG account, in that area

Re: Can you help identify my B&G boiler pump? Possible replacement? Repair parts?
"Point arrow towards wall" means do not point to floor or ceiling. IMO
Horizontal shaft position only. Some may have been confused by "Horizontal" and "Vertical" wording.
I have a 1961 school with 2 pumps similar to this. Both original motors still working.
Re: Buderus Hardware Help
And cost much more than $36 to service. They are nothing but trouble.
