30-something year old Columbia or Utica.

Looks like it may have dry-fired.

And what's with the barometric on the smoke pipe when there's a draft hood?

It's mounted at the rear of the boiler. The breech connection is actually the top of the draft hood.

Judging from the new flue cemented in to what looks like the old flue looks like someone just stuck it in to what was already there.

And all boiler manual's have pretty picture in them that show you exactly how to pipe them,

but then, you have to wan't to install it right

and be able to read.......so no.

Going out on a limb- it’s conceivable someone blocked the original hood with Sheetmetal. The Captain, Jim Davis, discusses this in his classes. The integrated “box” hoods are not as effective as a swinging barometric. The center sections get plenty of draft and the end sections get less.

The funnel is how they fill the boiler when it can't get water through the high Hartford loop.

Poor thing killed itself trying to run. Never had a chance

I don’t see where the Hartford loop is high. The Hartford loop height is defined where the return pipe comes down and rises back up to the larger equalizer pipe on the right of the picture. If anything, assuming the lowest operating point is somewhere in the sight glass range, the Hartford loop looks a little low.

It will never make proper steam without insulating the piping! Can't they see the obvious, shheeesh.

Or wet. I can't tell if it is the dry fired theory or if the basement had about 4 ft of water in it.

Obviously, the funnel is just a temporary replacement for the missing shower head.

I am absolutely shocked. EVERYONE knows (or should know) you cannot set a plastic flashlight on top of a steam boiler. Other than that, ehh.

Edit. After examining this photo more closely I did come to the conclusion that the gauge glass needs to be cleaned.

why didn’t they use PEX for the HEADER?
the draft regulator is to vent out the Steam from the cracked boiler to heat the basement.
And clear off the top of the boiler for the frying pan! Fercryinoutloud 😆🤣

Gas was shut off... Based on the burner/regulator/flue condition, I would argue you would die from high ambient CO before the boiler would blow up....Sadly, most if not all techs do not wear/carry a personal ambient CO meter. I have inspected many similar gas appliances in worse condition... Think disconnected/blocked/rusted flue exhaust and after a few steps down to the basement, my alarm set at CO 15ppm I quickly called the gas company for a shut off and red tag... I cannot stress enough that a personal CO meter should be required for all techs..

Nothing wrong here folks, just move along. Oh, don't forget your flashlight and tongs.
This kind of stuff is believable.
I see horrible installations like this and worse in my working area and it will continue to go on to eternity, unfortunately.
