Re: Old oil tank mystery
A gopher and a fat worm.
If the tank was in the basement, there would be no little hole, unless there was a seperate oil line run to another location outside, like an oil fired pool heater, or generator. Probable. Not likely.
If the tank was buried, the little hole would be there, but not the big holes.
Is there Bingo or golf or anything by you? You seem very bored.

Re: AFG burner stops in the middle of the night.
I appreciate y'all looking at the problem. I know intermittent problems are absolutely the hardest to diagnose, especially if you can't run tests. The problem furnace is in a rural area, so service contract is not an option. As far as "experienced techs" go, all the old boys that knew this stuff are long since retired, and the new kids appear to be just parts changers.
The Honeywell safety relay appears to be discontinued, so I'll put in the Beckett replacement and replace the CAD cell, and if that doesn't work I'll have her replace the entire furnace with a modern heat pump.

Re: Help Please! Half of Hydronic Zone not heating
I was the one who led you astray there. The irony is in my own home I have the Webstones.Wish I saw that sooner. Already put together a ballvalve + T with drain fitting for each loop. Gonna install nowhot_rod said:Those may be butterfly type purge valves. Really any type of valve can be used as a iso and balance valve.
For the least amount of connections and a purge valve that flows either direction, these Webstone work well
Re: Your nightmare...
INTPLM... freaking ouch on the watch band. No way to flick it off... just had to take it huh? That sucks. I enjoy watching younger guys solder. ( although now all they want to do is Propress ). I normally do a couple joint and show them... then guide them thru where to put the heat, how much solder is enough etc. Vertical joints seem to give them the most trouble. As you pro's know... its all about the heat and where to put it. My worst burn was from pipe welding. I was in a rush and a bit over confident in my abilities to weld a joint I had to lay down to get the bottom. A big ball of molten flux dripped off and got me right in the crease of the inside of my elbow. Mr cocky decided not to throw the welding leather jacket on.. Did you know that burns get infected really easy? They do... still have the scar.

Re: Your nightmare...
Hey it happens. You realize there are probably people out there who would pay to see you soldering, on a ladder with the whitie Tighties? Just had a thought.... god forbid you use too much solder and some drips off...heading toward the whitie tighties. A bad deal.I was so focused on getting the job done I didn't think to change. Just zoned in and got it done. Didn't want to inconvenience the family by waiting till morning. I didn't think of what a sight it must have been up on the later in the basement.

Luckily, no new scars from the soldering. Seems the solder scars have all been brought about when fully dressed.
The burn scar when solder got under my wrist watch, that was another time. Probably the worst one.

The first time I tried to solder pipes I had it drip on the tip of my middle finger and under the nail.Mad Dog_2 said:We've all had hot little balls of molten solder roll down our shirts. Mad Dog

Re: Dead Men Tips
Enjoyed the entire story. Especially the reference to manure and whether they asked to barrow some or brought their own. Made me laugh.
It's a far cry from when I would ask a customer if I could barrow a slice of bread or a strand or spaghetti.
Ask me. Ill respond.

What a wonderful way to start the day! Mr. Tower has such a professorial voice, probably influenced by working so much with lead. A also like the mutual respect shown by know how, old and new. Thanks!

Re: From page 14 "The Lost Art of Steam Heating Pressuretrol"
pedantic-an insulting word used to describe someone who annoys others by correcting small errors, caring too much about minor details..... Not so sure by asking a questing I would be annoying.. Probably wont be back not to worry Mr>Building superintendent/caretaker, 7200 sq. ft. historic house museum with dependencies in New England
Re: Vintage 1909 Gravity Hot Water Heating System
Thank you for your post about gravity hot water heating and your home.
Is the coal room in your basement still open?
I use a coal stoker boiler to heat my very old home with fin tube baseboard.
I wish I had cast iron radiators instead for the greater thermal mass they provide.
