@Brandon_MN I did pretty much what you are looking at not too long ago. Kept all the old pipes in the walls to avoid any interior work. In the basement I removed the main horizontal pipes and connected right to the eblow on the risers going up. Some of the risers had more than one rad, those got 5/8" feed, the rest 1/2". All pipe home run to two manifolds in the utility room. Ran all the new pipes through the joists so I now have a completely flat ceiling.
It does look a bit wrong to see 5/8" pex connected to 1 1/2" black pipe. The funny part is that the system works way better than it ever did before. Some of the rads that were far on the old gravity main would never get enough heat, with the new setup I can dial in the flow to these and get nice even heat everywhere.
Best part is no more pipes that I can bang my head into.
Undoing some of the old pipe was not fun, did break a pipe wrench with a 6' cheater bar but got all the pipes out of the fittings.

Re: York furnace slow fan speed
is y from the t-stat connected to the control board(or is it a communicating t-stat)? is it an ecm motor or is the speed set with tap connections on the control board?
essentially rtfm
Re: Have you cleaned the piping system for a converted gravity hot water space heating system?
Unless you do a total re-pipe let sleeping dogs lie. You stir up all that stuff and you will never get it out anyhow and it will cause more problems.
use a strainer and a dirt mag a big one and leave it as is
Re: Basement Heatloss - Boston
I'm with @hot_rod on this one. What have been your experiences in the past? say last winter was very cold in January…. That usually happens every year but we can just look at last year. What was the basement temperature for most of the January days?
- Reply A: The basement was the correct temperature. answer: It ain't broke. Don't fix it
- Reply B: the basement was warmer than i would like. Answer: Add some insulation to the pipes
- Reply C: The basement was cooler than I would like. Answer: remove som insulation from the main pipe
Re: backflow at funeral home
I ran into a similar situation. The funeral home only did 5-6 funerals per year. The water department told him he needed an RPZ when we gave him the quote, I thought he was going to need his own services. He tried to fight city hall. He didn't win they shut off the water to his building that was also his house. His wife didn't love that. He was calling us thieves one minute now he's your best friend and wants it installed yesterday.
Re: Amana Side?
The gal installing my system today has been to Dakin factory in Texas, Amana built on one side, Goodman on the other, same location.
I had a brother/ sister team install my new system today.
