Re: Adding C-wire to my system
Sometimes it is difficult for some folks to follow wiring diagrams so I thought I would post the before and after diagram. Of course, I don't have a crystal ball so the BEFORE is a guess at how the wires are connected, So @domolek will need to verify the "Before" diagram.
I have seen the “Before” wiring several times in my short 45 years of doing this stuff. As long as there is an extra unused wire in the line from the thermostat to the junction area, then it should be easy to do the "After" diagram. I don't know what color the extra wire might be on the line from the thermostat to the junction area, so I selected light blue to indicate that wire. But you can use whatever color the extra wire is, because electric is colorblind.
Hope this makes this idea as clear as can be
Re: Sad day at work - wall mount toilet tank hole
I was working on a roof top unit at Sports Authority in Seekonk, MA on Christmas weekend on a windy day and took a panel off a unit and put it flat on the roof next to the unit. I went to get some tools in the truck and came back up and the panel is gone. The wind picked it up and cartwheeled it across the roof and put a big gash in the rubber roof. Found the panel 50' away and got some silicone and sealed up the roof temporally. Told the manager what happened and told him he needed a roofer.
They called because they had 6 RTUs down no heat at all. I figured driving there that someone shut off the gas or a power problem.
Turns out the fire alarm system was shutting down the RTUs. I told him if you want heat, I can bypass the relays, but I am not responsible and you're going to have to sign the slip indicating that. He said go ahead we need heat. We have been having fire alarm issues, and the alarm company hasn't fixed it we have been calling them. i said you better call them right now.
Re: Ever seen one of these??
was there like a drying shelf on the bottom? looks like there are lugs to hold a shelf on the bottom.
Re: Vent placement in home 2-pipe steam heat system
Coal boilers also had about 10x the mass of iron and water compared to a modern boiler.
Re: Geothermal, one loop field, two air handlers
we’re picking away at this, I only got 3 1/2 hours on the job today. One of my guys did some of this manifold work as well. We also ran some 1” PE pipe through the basement. Back Monday to fire this puppy up. Maybe both puppies
yeah we slapped some vanes on that return

Re: Ever seen one of these??
That's for drying plates or keeping them warm before they're served.
Re: BMI capacitors?
My LG television started taking longer and longer to turn on after about 6 years. Replaced the capacitors with better quality ones and it’s been running fine for 12 years.
Good components make a difference.
Re: Gorton vents
Even stuff that says USA made may be on a slow boat from China.
When I was between years in college I had a summer job in Stamford, CT wiring control panels in a factory. Todd CEA. I was wiring a panel for the Cost Guard Station in Cape May, NJ.
The boss of the panel shop came around with a handful of stickers and put them on the panels being wired. The stickers said, "UNION MADE". Needless to say, we were not union.
53 years ago, wonder if that panel is still in use? Doubtful
Re: Radiators make my apartment unbearable during winter
When someone is focused on solving a problem in the design or to make things right by the conventional means, and does not want to do what they can on their own because it doesn't look nice or is outside of what the trade might recommend as a "proper" fix, then you can not fault them in their efforts. I applaud @wisco 's efforts to understand how the building works. I believe his efforts will pay off for the landlord if @wisco can get the landlord's ear with the proper information and fruits of their research. One can only hope for a proper outcome.
If all else fails, I'm sure that the blanket idea will not be lost in spite of themself. I don't believe that @wisco is interested in hearing more antidotal opinions on stopping the flow of heat from the radiator to the room. They have made that clear. How would YOU as an expert in the business solve this? If anyone has actual mechanical, technical, or operational advice (like the Ghost Flow Idea that I can't believe I didn't think of) to assist in the efforts to make the system balanced as it should have been designed in the first place, then please let us know about your ideas.
I am not sorry that I did the blanket suggestion in the beginning, but now that I understand what @wisco is asking, and what they are trying to do, I want to help them understand the "boiler system workings" in whatever way I can.
Although with limited info, I can only make educated guesses. I hope that those guesses are correct and that @wisco becomes the boiler expert tenant that saved big bucks on the fuel and therefore the rent does not need to go up next year.
