Re: HVAC Heat Shortcycling
Have you changed your air filter and ensure that all supply registers and dampers are open . Had the same thing happen to a friend recently another company suggested to replace the furnace because it was old 11years old installed by them . Ended up his filter which they said was clean was packed replaced it and all was good higher end aprilaire electronic air cleaner of course w the wires broken and filter packed again installed and serviced by them for 10 years never changed filter never clean condenser service agreement lol . They also stated that the unit must be leaking because of water marks near the burner it was really the fact they never insulated the suction line which for 10 years of them servicing every service guy was to lazy to put a piece of insulation on the suction line total hacks ,They have been suggesting replacement when the unit hit 11 years old gotta keep the revenue coming in i guess also when they installed they never did a chimney liner i had alert my friend of it and he blew it off for a few years until his chimney was falling apart and i reminded him and he had it lined .They where so good and trained as they state in every ad they run w nate trained employees (lol money grab bs er) that they wired the eac straight up powered all the time after it was first put in i walked in the door and could smell the ozone it produces alert him of the issue being his wife and daughter have respiratory issues . I took a closer look and saw that it was wired directly not to the provided eac terminals on the furnace. The bonus was that being it was total there mistake they wiped out a few grand that he owned them being they realized they where in a legal pickle for the neglect especially since the eac had a huge orange label on it stating that it produced ozone and should only be powered when the blower is operating , This was and is a large franchise company advertising everywhere pretty much in a lot of states and all i could say was yeah i work for myself instead of working for money hungry idiots . And another note there prices for a cold call service call are way to cheap for a real service men but it's about right for a salemens, also they always offer service maintenance contracts most are all bull and most of the time they do absolutely zip. I surely know your noy getting me out bed for 79 to 119 bucks all you would hear is a ring tone my time is worth more then that . You most likely would be in the same boat w public utilities worry free what me worry quote alfred e newman

Re: HVAC Heat Shortcycling
20 year old furnace, have a technician with a good camera inspect that heat exchanger before you start throwing parts at it.
*A "9 flash code" on a Trane XE 80 furnace typically indicates an issue with the igniter, meaning you should check the igniter circuit for potential problems like a faulty igniter itself or a poor connection to the circuit board
Re: New Return Pipe Noise During Renovation
Water hammer is loud, some years ago when a neighbor's boiler was replaced and the contractor did not bother to skim it he thought someone was breaking into the house type loud.
" our main vent was shooting steam. Like crazy. "
Has the pressure been verified, pressuretrol working correctly, pigtail is clear and not plugged up ?
Re: New Return Pipe Noise During Renovation
The tapping is the threaded hole where the pigtail threads into the cast iron boiler block. Occasionally they plug up too. The whole path from the inside of the boiler to the diaphragm (at the base ) of the pressuretrol needs to be clear. Otherwise the pressuretrol can't monitor the boiler pressure and shut the burner down when the 'Cut Out' pressure is reached (typically 1.5 PSI (1 PSI differential and 0.5 Cut In)).
Re: New Return Pipe Noise During Renovation
Two pipe system, it there a bad radiator trap that is letting steam into the return ?
Are you going to insulate the steam mains, I would. Looks like the walls would block the heat from the living space anyway.
Re: New Return Pipe Noise During Renovation
The steam and water vapor coning out of that vent is impressive, which makes me think the pressure is way too high and the vent may have failed since it should close with the presents of steam. Do you have any radiators closed off ?
Re: How well is my heating working at lower water temps?
Hydro coils are hard to dial in. What I have found works is once you get your outdoor rest in the ballpark is try reducing the water flow rate through the coil. Up to a certain delta T, the heat output (ie supply air temp) does not change much but you get much lower return water temperature which is what matters for condensing efficiency.

Re: How well is my heating working at lower water temps?
You might appreciate the "beestat" phone app. It can display the ecobee data in various ways, time to heat, estimates temp loss based on outdoor temp, etc. This all can be informative for fine tuning of those supply temps or outdoor resets curves.
Re: HVAC Heat Shortcycling
Maybe this video will help you a bit, not the greatest IMO, but maybe better than nothing. Looks like his gas valve was failing but he never measured the voltage applied to it.
What does your flashing error code indicate ?
Re: HVAC Heat Shortcycling
It sounds like a one hour lockout. There should be a code while the fan is blowing cold. Time to break out the thermometers and manometers.
