Re: A heating challenge!
A roof top packaged heat pump might be the simplest option. It will use a heck of a lot less electricity than a resistance boiler and gets you AC for free. The big names (Daikin, LG, Carrier, York) all make a version in their light commercial product lines, you'll have to see which one is locally available and works better in cold weather. Probably one unit for the shop and one for the office to separate air to keep dust out.

Re: A heating challenge!
Hi, I assume there is a loading dock with big roll up door? If so, is that door kept closed most of the time? If it is, there is probably a lot that can be done with the shell of the building to make it more efficient. With that done, or even just designed, you can get an idea of how much heat you'll really need. Do take internal gains into account!

Re: Type of fixture ?
After you turn the water in the basement off….with the knob off and sliding off the chrome plated tube, you must be sure to remove the hair pin…horse shoe shaped clip from the valve.
That white nylon tool usually comes with the new cartridge. Rotate the cartridge around and back and forth. You can put a screwdriver shaft thru the hole in the cartridge shaft to pull as you rotate.
I then take a 3/4" copper fitting brush to clean out the body.
Then flush it by turning on the water for a few seconds.
I have someone hold something like a vac cleaner hose over the body to avoid a mess and get a longer flush.
Don't forget the hair pin clip.
Re: Leaking Steam Boiler In Vermont - Am I Screwed?
I wanted to post an update for everyone who chimed in on this boiler issue I had. The new boiler is up and running beautifully. @Charlie from wmass installed it for us, and actually redid all of the incorrect piping issues that I didn't know were problems. I replaced all of the vents on every single radiator with Vent-Rite #1 vents, and they've been amazing at letting me control the east side of the house where I want to keep the temp down in the 50's, so that I only have to turn them up when guests are visiting.
I am shocked at how different the new boiler is. You don't even hear it running and all of the clanking pipes in the house are gone. Charlie insulated all the pipes near the boiler, and I am spending next week insulating all the rest of the pipes in the basement (354 feet of 1" fiberglass insulation).
The old boiler was very oversized, and now we should save on oil, especially with the pipes being insulated. We've also got a digital Ecobee wifi thermostat that works very well and lets us track daily run time with a third party app called BeeStat, and a water meter so that I can monitor how much water goes into the boiler to replace loss.
I am very glad Charlie helped us! Nobody in Vermont would, and he went above and beyond what we could have ever expected. He's also one of the nicest people you could meet! Thanks everyone for the advice.

Re: Mod-con Boilers and Outdoor Reset
ODR is fine in those applications! Go for it. The benefits are smaller though since you’re already in the condensing temps
Re: Mod-con Boilers and Outdoor Reset
Less benefit on low temperature systems.
But we are in the comfort business, so the valve could be in consistent operation, constant circulation possibility.

Re: Type of fixture ?
I’d guess delta or moen but hard to tell. You’ll have to remove cartridge to see what you need.
Steps to remove:
- Shut off water
- Pop the plastic trim off the control handle
- Remove center screw and control knob
- From there you should be able to remove face plate to access valve body and cartridge.
This video walks through the process nicely.

Re: Type of fixture ?
That is a Moen shower valve. They make two replacement cartridges. Purchase both and return the one that doesn't fit.
If it is as old as you say, and It looks like it is, it would be the older version of the two types that they offer.

Re: Short cycling boiler. I'm stumped.
You need to have the black wire already disconnected. this way the burner will not run at all.
As soon as you get the SideShot to operate then connect the yellow so P1 and P2 are connected
Then the burner will run
You only have 5 seconds from the start of the SideShot until the P1 and P2 are jumped for this test to work.
Re: Short cycling boiler. I'm stumped.
Does the pressure switch have an adjustment on the side of it? That may need to be changed to get this to operate properly.
Looking at the instructions, that pressure switch is not adjustable
ALSO. Jumping P1 and P2 is only a temporary test. it is not a fix. This test will prove the pressure switch is the cause of the short cycling or it will eliminate the pressure switch as the source of the short cycling.
