Re: Is a high efficiency boiler worth it?
I could ague with you about modulation and matching the load and reducing carbon footprints and by the time you add a buffer tank and an I-Valve you have spent as much as a mod-con would cost, but I am done with you. Once again you're smart and I'm not. (borrowed from Icesailor)

Hat, is there anything that you will not argue about? If we all just bow down to you and admit that you are all knowing would it satisfy you? I used to think Icesailor was difficult, you take the cake!Theoretical numbers are great and all, but I can pull out my customer's fuel bills and prove my claims.Interesting Joe.
Did the customer have a brand new CI boiler with a brand new heat exchanger, perfectly matched to the heatloss with a proper system and suitable DT pumps?
Then, of course you removed this system and installed the mod-con.
And you have the customer's fuel bills?
Please post them.

As usual Hat, you're right and I and everyone else who has an opinion that differs from yours is wrong. I do love the way that you compliment those who agree with you though. Very magnanimous!Nope, I'll argue about anything.

No need to bow down and agree with me. Just stand up with some backbone and come right back at me with some data to support your position.
Nothing like a good argument. Believe it or not, we all don't need to sit together singing Kumbaya.
But, posting a "disagree" and running away from the argument is simply detestable. You don't know anybody who would do that..........do you?
In this specific case, several of you have failed to read the OP's post and want to argue about the savings that a mod-con will generate as compared to a 40 year old and tired CI boiler. That was NOT his question.
Take a cue from Rich. We argue all the time and frequently come to common ground. It's invigorating. He's got a pair...........so do I.

Proper sized heating unit?
I'm in the middle of an addition/renovation adding 1500 sq. ft. to my current 1500 (all single floor) in WNY. I will be removing my forced air unit and replacing with radiant heat throughout. Addition is 3/4 slab with a 288 sq ft. basement connected to my current full basement. My contractor has recommended a Peerless Purefire 4 (210,00 B.T.U.) unit. Seems a wee bit large to me... I haven't had a heat loss assessment made.
Re: Is a high efficiency boiler worth it?
I see a comparable amount of issues with mod cons and cast iron - fairly low. It's been my experience that the mod cons tend to be more expensive to fix.

Re: Is a high efficiency boiler worth it?
Wow! Thank you all for your time and advices. There is a lot to digest here, but I think I'm going with the conventional setup.
JA, what u said was consistent with the plumber we liked most, made the most sense, and was the most patient and detailed-oriented in his evaluation. He was also the only one who measured out the baseboards.
Thanks again!

Re: Is a high efficiency boiler worth it?
The fact is that you will save more along the lines of 30-40% in fuel when treated as a system as opposed to a bunch of parts .
Use PVC for the intake air and PP for exhaust .

Re: Is a high efficiency boiler worth it?
The maintenance on a high eff. boiler is identical to every other boiler. Sure, some of the parts are more expensive, but 80% systems have expensive parts, too.
Not only do you save on thermal efficiency, but you can look at another 20-30% savings from burner modulation.
