Proper sized heating unit?
I'm in the middle of an addition/renovation adding 1500 sq. ft. to my current 1500 (all single floor) in WNY. I will be removing my forced air unit and replacing with radiant heat throughout. Addition is 3/4 slab with a 288 sq ft. basement connected to my current full basement. My contractor has recommended a Peerless Purefire 4 (210,00 B.T.U.) unit. Seems a wee bit large to me... I haven't had a heat loss assessment made.
Re: Is a high efficiency boiler worth it?
I see a comparable amount of issues with mod cons and cast iron - fairly low. It's been my experience that the mod cons tend to be more expensive to fix.

Wow! Thank you all for your time and advices. There is a lot to digest here, but I think I'm going with the conventional setup.
JA, what u said was consistent with the plumber we liked most, made the most sense, and was the most patient and detailed-oriented in his evaluation. He was also the only one who measured out the baseboards.
Thanks again!

The fact is that you will save more along the lines of 30-40% in fuel when treated as a system as opposed to a bunch of parts .
Use PVC for the intake air and PP for exhaust .

Re: Is a high efficiency boiler worth it?
The maintenance on a high eff. boiler is identical to every other boiler. Sure, some of the parts are more expensive, but 80% systems have expensive parts, too.
Not only do you save on thermal efficiency, but you can look at another 20-30% savings from burner modulation.

Re: Takes too long to get hot water
A cross connection is sounding more likely. Isolate any places where H&C connect, if possible. Turn off the washer valves.
Any H&C hose bibs in the building?
Some single handle tub and shower valves has isolation screw valves under the trim ring. Just keep eliminating the potential cross connections. It's a time consuming job, but it needs to be eliminated from the equation.

Re: Rusted Chambers in 16 month old oil boiler...Please Advise
Is there a domestic coil in the boiler? I would preheat the electric water heater with the coil and put an aqua stat on it to maintain 160 degrees for the summer so the boiler doesn't sit idle all summer and condense. Also get it cleaned before it gets shut down for the summer while it is still hot
