AC replacement System....
I'm BAAAACK..... And since you all were so helpful when I replaced my heating system with a Bosch gas condensing unit, (my new LOVE), I thought I would get more expert opinions on a new central AC system.... currently have a Trane XE900....It has a small leak not worth finding or fixing since its almost 30 years old....Rheem has been recommended so far or American Standard......but have read mixed reviews on these as well as Trane...On a budget of around $7-8000... May be able to go a bit higher......Any input very much appreciated...

Re: Age old question - tank vs tankless
4Johnpipe:
In your Torphy picture, how did you manage to come out of the floor with back pipe, go uphill to the left, and then have it go straight up? Is that some of the Chinese fittings we were talking about? Or is it just a severe optical illusion?
Also, what is the reason for a mixing valve on that unit? Does it not modulate to control the output temperature?
Thanks, Rick

Re: Old Steam Radiator
I did a job last week where I replace 15 out of 20 radiator valves in a house that dates back to the 1880s. I had to heat up and remove bushings on radiators that have had them in place for over a hundred years and had no problems. If the radiator is so bad that it will Crack heating it like that, then it's probably not worth saving
Re: I smell exhaust?
Photo of pipe that was in the cinder block foundation wall going into chimney.
Re: Replace Steam Boiler vs Convert to Hot Water
Ditto to what Bob said. FYI, good hot water pros are also hard to find. Has anyone done a heat loss calculation? Absolutely necessary for hot water heating
Re: Cooling with basement air?
Give the customer what they want. Just make sure you make allowances for adding AC in the future so that it's easily done.
Re: Do you set up your hot water storage tanks properly?
I don't know, no expert on recirc loops, but wondering, assuming the tank would be the source, so as long as the loop was circulating and being used I'm not sure how much bacteria would grow in the recirc loop. When it returned to the tank anything that did start to grow would die.
However I think if a building or hotel, whatever was down for more than a few days then you'd have to assume you've got bacteria throughout the system.

Re: Residential Fire Sprinklers
Of course! I did post some photos of the boiler a few weeks back.

Re: RPZ drafting symbol?
EzzyT - Thank you! The bottom drawing is pretty much what I gave them but they said it wasn't good enough. Piotr Zelasko is doing a CAD drawing of my piping schematic. Thanks again for the effort.
