Re: Advice for replacing torn Flex with metal ducts

If the AC worked with 14" Flex, then 14" round metal will have less restriction because it is smooth inside. So you are probably correct with the size. If you want to be sure that the critters stay away from the insulation, you can get sections of 20" metal duct to put around the insulation and seal it with tape. If you insulate any metal duct with bubble wrap or fiberglass duct wrap, then you will always have that same concern. The best critter repellant is to get something they don't like the smell of and place it around the duct work. Moth balls are offensive to some critters, find out what type critter and what smell they don't like, then put that stuff near your stuff that you don't want the critters near.
Just don't tell EllieMay that you don't like Critters

Re: Homeowners Versus Contractors
Hi, Just read the whole thread... Long ago, I didn't want to have to compete on price, so I specialized in domestic hot water. It wasn't too many years before I was getting referrals from the water company and power company, who both have rules saying they never refer contractors. I was also getting referrals from other contractors. I sent them all the other plumbing work that wasn't about hot water, so that part made some sense. So, the way to sidestep the whole competitive pricing issue for me was to specialize, and give the kind of work to other contractors that they liked best. Guess I've spent most of my life in left field.

Re: Type of PEX for paver snow melt system?
I've never gotten into the data collection side of this, but I do think there is a small amount of lost transfer due to the nodules in Heat-Sheet or Crete-Heat or those other types compared to stapling over foam. Measurable? Probably not. Most are simply sloped to some sort of surface drain, but I have seen a few where they placed drains at foam height and let it filter through the pavers. I don't have a good answer for what the ideal scenario is, as all my snowmelt at home is concrete and I would never have it any other way. Call it a bias, if you will. Sand typically ends up around 2" above the tubing or nodule, I'm guessing mostly for play but again that's not my bag of marbles so I can't say with any accuracy. I'm typically long gone before that part of the job gets done.

Re: Advice for replacing torn Flex with metal ducts
As far as cutting the 5 Ft pieces of pipe to a custom size, you will be better off with offset snips because your hands stay above the work. With the standard snips your hand is between the upper side of the sheetmetal cut to the left and the lower side of the sheetmetal cut to the right. right between the two razor sharps edges of the metal.
and when you cut a 14" round duct, that is over 43" of cutting that edge. A person can end up with lots stitches if thy are not careful. Have band-aids ready. If you need to use the flat cut end to go into a 90° elbow you might need a crimping tool also.

Also, to reduce noise, the air flow should go from the flat edge opening to the crimp end. Try not to make a pipe or a fitting with a crimp end on both ends of the same piece.
Here is a set of both right and left snips from HD. You may find that only right snips will not get you everywhere you need to cut. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-Left-and-Right-Offset-Aviation-Snips-2-Pack-48-22-4523/302716388

A2WHP at AHR boiler booths
Most of the boiler manufacturers were showing heat pumps in their booth.
I liked the look of the U.S. Boiler Ambient offering.
The HP had a rugged attractive jacket. A nicely built buffer tank with 6KW backup, 20,460 BTU/hr.
Also a nice metal enclosure with the control interface with boiler and heat pumps combined, dual source, a hybrid system.

Re: Plumbing archaeology
Lead is not "noble" but it sure lasts a long time.Until a squirrel chews a hole in it. Lead flashing pic from my chimney about 2 weeks ago. Found 2 holes in the lead sheet chewed (probably) by the nuisance squirrel who got into our attic and had to be trapped and evicted a few years ago. Note the teeth marks all around the perimeter of the holes. Second hole is at upper left.

If you keep all piping under the tank, do you put the filter there as well? I was wondering about ease of servicing. What type of filters do you put on? I recently got rid of my fulflo (which in my opinion is 2nd rate) and installed a garber spin on. Quick and easy!

Old (rare?) flat steel radiators?
Hey gurus! Any information on these would be appreciated! Hoping for age, manufacturer, EDR. I’ve never seen these before. Found for sale on fb.

Re: Possible oddball heat pump use
You will actually want to get a Refrigerant to Water heat exchanger. Don't try to re-invent the wheel

Re: Plumbing archaeology
Periodic table element "Pb" is the metal lead. "Plumbum" in Latin. The man knows his Latin! Yes, the lead pipes could have been from ancient Rome. The shutoff valves on the supplies are bronze.
Romans were using the same stuff they used in Boston.
It sure has been a long time between Roman plumbing and John Winthrop's "shining city on the hill"--Boston.
How long have we had copper? Pex?
