Re: My three worst jobs sites. What are yours?
They would have been too had they know that was what it was before they crawled in to it. Maybe a corollary to never step in any unexplained liquids on the sidewalk when it hasn't rained recently.
Re: My three worst jobs sites. What are yours?
Went into a crawlspace to fix a floor furnace. After I got in there and was laying in some wet muddy crawlspace floor, someone flushed the toilet and I found out quickly that the sewage piping was broken, got out fast and went home to shower and change clothes. Never went back to that house.
Re: small load slab radiant
I have heard of many electric cable or mat system failing. Then your done. They finally started sending “loud mouths” with the Watts Radiant electric systems to alert you if a damaged cable durning tile application.
If the radiant tube in your bathroom freezes you probably have bigger problems to worry about😮

Re: AO Smith Gas Water Heater Warranty Replacement
75 gallon is definitely used in residential. All over my service area, anyway.
Re: A Makeshift Radiator
That was a standard thing back in the day. Do a web search for "pipe coil radiator".
It should be pitched so the condensate can drain by gravity.
But you still need to do the calculations if you hope to heat the space successfully.

Re: Steam Boiler Pressure & Some Of My Adventures
Does the riser from the boiler split into two mains at the Red box ? Is the other ends of the mains at the Red arrows ? If so, if the two mains and radiator venting are not symmetrically equal as far as air venting and steam flow, air may be trapped in the actual functional farthest part of the system until it is hopefully vented by the farthest radiator(s) venting the asymmetrical part of the system. Not an optimum configuration.
I believe to avoid this issue the 'steam main extensions' should each have its own main vent (sized to balance the mains) and each (individually) should drop down to about the level of the bottom of the boiler then combined together (as a wet return) to go to the Hartford loop. Presently it is combined way above the water line where steam can flow from one 'steam main extension' into the other.
Re: Carlin Hot water heater keeps going on and off.
Oil appliances are not like refrigerators, toasters or vacuum cleaners. You don't just plug them in and expect them to work.
They need to be cleaned every few years and tuned and adjusted like a car they need professional attention.
Re: 1/2" tin-coated steel tubing that matches CTS in old fin-tube system
not all steel tube can be flared, it depends on the temper, same with copper, hard drawn copper will not take a flare

Re: Converting to a hot water heater
@stelcom66,
As you said the anode is 5 years old I doubt it would be cone in only 5 years. I would have it replaced. While your equipment is 23 years old it may last many more years.
Re: Help with screw nut
Erin, I'm not going to add anything more than anyone else is said except for you need to get someone in their professional looking at that burner. It's really dirty. Where do you live we can find someone to recommend to come in and take a look
