The Things I See Out There

what's the flo check for? i don't see any evidence that they are making dhw with that boiler.

Old gravity system? Probably lots of expansion/water volume. As strange as it looks, easier to source #30's, then 60's or larger, when replace time comes. Lots of supply place, don't carry anything larger than #30.

" If the relief valve blows add another tank"
I do like the 1/2" copper supply to return bypass
The ball valve handles removed to prevent balance tampering.
0-30 psi ASME tanks are not required. Maybe that is why they used multiples of the cheaper tanks
Only 1 circulator so no need for a flow check. "We put those on every job but I don't know why"

That's the staged-admittance configuration. Charge each one a few lbs higher than the next & when one is full the next one takes over.

I've hung double tanks in a pinch, but 4??? Looks like a Bunch of bananas 🍌 😆 . Mad Dog

All that work and no valve w/drain to isolate the tanks. I don't think they do much service work.
Also, no support for the tanks. Those are two of my pet peeves: isolation and support.
Insulation would have been a good idea.
8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour
Two btu per sq ft for degree difference for a slab7 -
The flo check could’ve been there because they used to have a coil. Or the boiler maintains temperature.

i think i see some hanger iron in there

In my best David Attenborough:
"Here we see thermal expansion tanks in their natural habitat. While tanks are usually solitary creatures, here we see the rare exception of a strong family pack, signifying that the individuals determined their survival would be better as a pack, rather than on their own"

The local RE Michel stocks a floor #30 and can get up to a 90 in a day or two. That’s where I get them. But I also doubt that they would have had four these #30’s on the shelf.
I wonder if they started with one and then kept adding them until the relief valve stopped releasing.

out of curiosity when you mention a floor mounted number 30 tank are you talking about a floor mounted tank similar to an ex30 or an SX-30V? I only ask because I have seen contractors in my shop ask for a floor mounted number 30, looking for a 4.4 gallon-ish tank and they get the SX-30V which is 14 gallons (similar to EX90) and end up paying more than they should.
I am surprised the local supply house doesn't have 4 on the shelf! even with Amtrol prioritizing shipments to big box stores we still have around 50 or so in each branch here.

An SX30.
RE Michel branches get a supply truck from their distribution center twice a week, so the bean counters don’t want to leave a lot of things on the shelves of the branches that doesn’t move quickly.
There’s a fair amount of hydronic work around here, but this is definitely not boiler country like the North East.
