any experimenters here?

Hi, The ferrule idea sounds like risky business. You could do a test and see at what pressure the packing connection blows off the pipe 🚀. My question is what problem are you looking to solve?

a compression ferrule is a connection system. It locks into the pipe or tube to keep it from pulling apart.
Although there are other definitions for a ferrule I use wire ferrules on stranded wire to give you a single pin for terminal strips

Why? Why not cut it back and install a new ferrule? Not long enough? Get some tubing, a compression union, and a new ferrule.

Question is about joining pipes & tubes on bench and testing connections against water hammer and flexing.
Decades ago a colleague used to do that. Both solder and compression connections can fail. Some flares do too. So experiments were about what is easiest to fix.

It is a common connection in Europe. Radiator, thermostatic, balance, prv valves, piping and inside a lot of mod cons is done with ferrule fittings.
Pex to manifolds are usually a ferrule fitting. IOt is a grst fitting for PAP tube.

Ferrules (compression rings) work. Single flares work. Double flares work. Captive o-rings work. Soldering works. Brazing works. Welding works. Packed fittings work.
They also all can fail…
It's not what works, it's what are you trying to do? What pressures? What cycles? Peaks? Temperatures? Ease of disassembly for service? Use the best tool for the given job.

Across the pond they call them "Olives". They even make puller to pull the olives off but I would do what @HVACNUT suggested.

Wonder if puller conditions tube for next job?

»They also all can fail…« what about threaded connections? Dishwashers or ice makers?

Yes to all.

you mean the ones made of steel that rust out?

I guess technically a pack joint is a compression fitting that uses packing. It also uses a clamp to clamp the fitting to the pipe.
They work extremely well and do not seem to care about imperfections in the pipe. But I certainly wouldn't try to use packing in place of a ferrule on a fitting designed for one. There's really nothing to hold the pipe in the connection so it doesn't push out.

Crank too hard on faucet bonnet and stem won't turn. So why can't packing secure tube linearly?

I don't think your hand compares to 100+ psi pushing a tube out of a fitting.
