You can't fix stupid...

I saw this slogan on another post and had to order a tee shirt. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K6ZWTMB/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1&customId=B0752XJYST

I never really thought of duct tape as legit material for steam or hydronics.
I have a meeting this afternoon where it would sure come in handy. I don't want to fix the guy (because you can't) but if I could just make him a little harder to hear.... :D

Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side, a dark side, & it helps hold the universe together.

  • I do stupid things; does that make me stupid and unable to learn?

You may not be able to fix stupid, but who is the judge?

I'd say some people bestow the stupid label as a way to advance themselves.

It's a funny thing to say at the expense of being cruel and often, unfair.

Apologies to anyone that I've offended, but it rubs me the wrong way when this phrase is used in error which seems often enough.
    8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

Well, sure; but some of us try really hard to not do stupid things. Others, not so much.

    I agree, A teachable moment.
I suspect a competitor or two has called each one of us on this list, stupid :)

I agree with all of the above. However, like anything else, it is all about the context. Sure, we all do stupid things and I think it is good to be able to laugh about it. There are also folks walking the earth who insist that their way, which has repeatedly failed them is the correct and only way. For those folks, I am afraid duct tape may be the only remedy.

    Isn't this site about heating?

  • Yes, but sometimes you have to wander around, outside the boiler room.

My people skills are a bigger asset to the company than my other skills, & those're not insignificant.

Unfortunately, a lot of what we see in the field can't be explained any other way. For example:

It has lately become fashionable to avoid calling out mistakes, lest someone be offended. However... a mistake is a mistake (we've all made at least one!) and we often fail to recognise our own mistakes (or at least I do), unless someone else points them out to us. This is not to say that, upon seeing something particularly ham-handed, one shouldn't say something. One should, to the individual, in a polite but solid way (if it's just a different way of doing things which works, that's not a mistake; perhaps let it be -- or even see if maybe it isn't a better way!). That's one of the best ways to learn. If the other party chooses to take offence, that is his or her problem, not yours, and doesn't mend the error.

Well put, that is how we advance the industry, not every installer makes errors out of willingness.

Hi @Jamie Hall , There is that old saying, "praise publicly but criticize privately." ... or something like it. Still, if something is unsafe, it really needs to be called out.
I had a plumber move the T&P on a water heater up in the piping (away from the tank) so it could attach to the existing drain line. I told the owners that it was wrong. The plumber was furious at me, so I explained how that placement essentially disabled the temperature function of the valve and put his clients at risk. Pretty quickly, he thanked me. No good comes from arguing with physics. :o

    Yours, Larry
