I had a call from a fellow in the country side in Ohio who has a Mouat system with a bad original oil burner. I'm 60 now and spent my entire trade life working in areas served with gas. Not only did i not know how to replace an oil burner, i had never seen an oil burner. ..I know, the oil guys are saying whats the big deal..lol... but i didn't want to do something stupid so i called the one person i knew, who would know, and Steamhead made a road trip for it.
It was a pleasure to kibbutz with him again. It had been a long time since we crossed paths in Chicago and Cleveland. Needless to say Steamhead got the new burner up and running lickedy split. And taught this old dog some new tricks.

Thanks again for the conversation, and the education, not to mention Mr. Mouat is smiling upon you from his grave for rescuing one of his systems.

    The pleasure was mine, Gerry.

And I'll bet Reginald W. Beckett is smiling too, because one of his original burners lasted as long as it did. It was making lots of soot though, not sure if this was due to improper setup or something else. We replaced it with a current-model Beckett AF.

That Beckett Commodore model CB-1 burner was interesting. It's an axial-flow design like the Midco RE series gas burners use. And I've never seen an air tube that was shaped like a fire-hose nozzle- 5" down to 4" IIRC. That must have made for some serious air velocity. There was no spinner vane inside the tube- if it came from the factory that way, they must have relied on that velocity to mix the sprayed oil with the air.

I also want to thank Steamhead. Just for being Steamhead. And really, isn't that enough?

    Sounds dangerous >:)

Oh, if any of you are thinking of traveling through Wheeling, WV over the next few months- don't. They have the main I-70 interchange all torn out. If you're just passing thru, use the I-470 bypass. If you're connecting with one of the other highways running thru there, do it elsewhere. It's one detour after another and they're not always marked properly. I came back via Steubenville, OH and Weirton, WV on US 22.

I only saw 1 Beckett Commodore and I remember the axial flow. I do remember not being impressed with the fire

And much thanks to you Dan as its this site that facilitated my eventual meeting with Steamhead in the first place. It’s a small world 😉
