Money is a big factor here. I not saying the suggestion isn't a good one, but, if I can get the same result on just playing with the valves a little at a time. That will cost me time, but no money out of my pockets

my father bought this house before i was born, I'm 61, and we excepted the fact, that the living room is the coldest room in the house. I hardly go in the room, so it's not a big deal that it is colder, but, I just might consider in the future, to do something with the deck. over the living room radiators

Over six hundred posts to get to that. You really don't mind it!

What happened to the fans? Didn't you put fans behind the rads?
  • maybemark
    maybemark Member Posts: 1,131
are you referring to the living room?
I would like it to be the same as the rest of the house, that's why i was considering more radiators, and that's why i put the aluminum in. I said, family excepted the fact, the living room is the coldest room in the house.
I still am trying to help the situation with the living room

yes, i have one behind there, and i ordered another one for the other side. the fans do help, but now with lower water temps, they don't help as much

Why did the water temp go down?
  • maybemark
    maybemark Member Posts: 1,131
they worked better last year, when I did not have the new boiler in.
I imagine they are working some now, I feel the fans, but i never tested without the fans on. i think they work a little now, that's why I am trying a second one in there

    These fans are thermostatically controlled?
  • maybemark
    maybemark Member Posts: 1,131
I don't understand you saying delete. delete what?
yes, the fan is behind the radiator. the water temp went becuse i put this new boiler in, I had a 35 year old boiler last year

The one fan is, yes, i hooked it up to an attic fan thermostat, but, I will change that, once i get the other fan
  • Eastman
    Eastman Member Posts: 927
What are you going to change it to?

    maybemark Member Posts: 1,131
fans that will run at a speed all the time except in the night, they will turn off at night

    Eastman Member Posts: 927
But the heat is not on all the time, you would be blowing cold air a lot.
  • maybemark
    maybemark Member Posts: 1,131
I meant to say a low speed, sorry

I liked the thermostatically controlled fan.

the heat is on ll the time but at a low water temp

neither am I, if i can give a suggestion, you probably be better off talking to someone who knows all about boilers. I'm not that person

Eastman.......$20 -4" duct fan, Mark a 4" hole in the deck of the cover. The cover has reinforced concrete, so you drill a series of holes, then knock it through. Slide it into the hole, or slit the end of it and screw it in place. Drop the cord down the hole to his thermostat. If it's speed can be controlled by a dimmer switch, or rheostat, it would be even better. Mark is a finish carpenter and could easily make a decorative box to hide the fan. It will force convective flow, and evacuate all the heat from the box, into the living room. Maybe $30 out-of-pocket, and an hours labor tops.

    Sounds like a plan.

Paul, i mentioned before that might be the way to go. i don't know if you can bring the speed down on those fans, they are made to get better air flow to rooms that are having a hard time heating or cooling. The speed of the fan is high. I'm not sure a high fan speed would work, since the water temp is so low.
If they can reduced (speed) it might be a good option

I can't figure out the resistance to the idea....It's not labor intensive. SWEI might be able to answer the rheostat, dimmer switch question, bit I don't know how to make it so he gets notified he was mentioned.

I told you, that it might be the way to go, that's not resistance, I mentioned in the future I might consider doing something with the deck. I am having trouble walking with so much pain, let alone working. I just had surgery on my knee

    @SWEI see Paul48's question above.

@Paul48 like that! just put @ in front and start to type their name, a list will pop up and you can click an select the person you want.

Buy a variable speed fan if you want/need one. Running single phase induction motors on light dimmers is, um, suboptimal.
Computer style muffin fans (which can easily be had in sizes up to 8 inches or so) are trivial to varispeed. Lots of sub-$10 PWM driver boards out there.

    Thanks Kurt
I already ordered 2 13" tall fans that are adapted down to dc, it osculates and has 4 speeds. it's 13 x 4 x 4 I should be able to get them back there, and put it on the lowest speed

An angle grinder with a diamond blade will make quick, neat work of that plant shelf, when you are ready for that solution. Use a shop vac to contain the dust while cutting.

Someone suggested puttong aluminum behind the radiators to the top of the radiators to help move the hot air out, I did that thank you someone and myself said put fans behind the radiators to help move the hot air out (convection) someone suggested to set the valves of all the radiators down to just 1/4 turn and turn the circs on high, then adjust as needed, if there is a warm room, turn less, if there is a cold room move the valve a little more open. These 3 suggestions I have very close to 70 degrees in my house, including my living room, I think all of the suggestion and want to thank all of you who pitched in with their thoughts. I truly appreciate it

Gordy, I will cross that bridge when i get to it. And i hope you and everyone else might help me, if I can't figure it out myself.
Gordy, I do thank you for all your time

Your most welcome Mark. Nothing should change theoretically now that things are balanced. You must be making condensate by the tanker load.
  • maybemark
    maybemark Member Posts: 1,131
yes, water is coming out, and going right in the floor drain
  • maybemark
    maybemark Member Posts: 1,131
Gordy, you say water should be coming out like a tanker load full.
I just went downstairs, the condensation doesn't seem any different than before. I did go ahead and checked out the radiator in the basement, I have the valve wide open, nice and warm. I'm happy. Right now it's only in the 30's here. I'm not sure what my system will be like when it's 0, or -0. I won't worry about that now.
