Well deserved, it is great when folks outside the trades recognize our world and folks like Dan who make it always interesting. This web site according to Dan was started in 1998. I first met Dan in 1999, I had never heard of him before. He was sitting in a class I was doing on Hydronic Controls and on the morning break stood up and turned to the class and said "hey pay attention to this guy he knows what he is talking about". That sure can give you some credibility. I came on to the website soon after that and it was the most amazing bunch of people I have had the priveledge of knowing in those early days. We sure had some interesting debates and discussions. Many who frequented the site back then have gone on to become leaders in our industry working as instructors and writers of columns in trade magazines. Some heading up organizations that further our trade. It has been an amazing journey and I am so glad to have been allowed to dwell here over the years and perhaps lend a little assistance when I can. Dan made it all happen. How dare you retire before me.

She's a nice lady. She sat in the front and talked to me afterward about doing this. She's a freelancer and I'm so happy for her getting published in The New Yorker. That's like a dream for any writer.

My sister reads the New Yorker. I sent her this article and I'm happy to be able to say that I've met you (Minnesota Wetstock) and appreciate how you made the community that taught me what I needed to know to have the system that makes my home so comfortable. And isn't that what it's about? Thanks Dan.

I met Dan about 15 years ago fresh out of high school and about a month into this amazing and proud industry. My boss at the time dragged me to one of Dan's seminars, 15 minutes in I was hooked and had the thurst to know the history and knowledge of how, when, where and why we do things in the industry. That old boss of mine was an old timer and now is one of our beloved Dead Men and he was marveled on how much of the history of the industry was not cared for and not taught. I remember sitting down at the beginning of that seminar and him smacking on the back of the head and saying to me " Stay pay attention open your ears, eyes, mind and take as many notes as you can because this moment in time will be a game changer in your life, and it sure was. Well Dan Thank you for all that you've taught us as whole and keep teaching us as we keep reading your books, articles and this great website to keep us interacting and helping one another.

Congratulations Dan. You did us proud

It's not so much a case of "You got what you paid for", as it is a matter of "You DIDN'T get what you DIDN'T pay for, and you're NOT going to get what you thought you were in the way of comfort". Borrowed from Heatboy.

    Recognition well deserved !

I am just a homeowner. If it had not been for your website, I would never understood much about the most expensive component in my house and, would never have met the incredible Gerry Gill. After reading your Lost Art of Steam Heating and posting a question on your site regarding my Mouat system, Gerry responded the same day. Now my home, and many others in the Cleveland area, not only have fined tuned steam systems but also understand something about how they work. I was fortunate enough to hear you when you came to Cleveland several years back. BTW, our neighborhood has many homes built before 1915 and during Sunday open houses, I run down to the basement first just to check out the boiler piping--your informative storytelling got me hooked (my wife prefers to use a term for 'messed up').

    agree, Clapton

I am seeing local companies doing a decent job at residential steam boiler installation to a standard I did not see 10 years ago. These are not people I have seen here in terms of posting, nor are they listed in the contractor sections. But it is clear that they must have the Lost Art of Steam Heating or lurk here.

This just illustrates the reach of Dan's persistent efforts in this field. It also doesn't hurt that Dan's writing keeps people coming back. :-)

And for those of us out on the field, and I think I speak for many others in this, it's nice having that feeling that somehow Dan's got my back. I can pull out the Lost Art or Greening Steam or send a prospective client to this site. And that's all the ammo I need to stick to my guns in the interest of Best Practices.

For this, and the wonderful community this site has nurtured, I am eternally grateful!

Living here in the Midwest, I hadn't yet received my New Yorker - so I liked getting your link to the article. But as a reader of the magazine, how did that fine free-lance author stumble upon the subject for the article? Surely not by reading a plumbing/heating magazine in a beauty shop :)

Yes, Zora took the class because she lives with steam heat. She came up to me afterwards and said, "You really care about these people, don't you." To which I pled guilty.
