\"The Best Bean You Can Bag\"

A direct quote from Gloria Jean. Who'd a thunk she knew Robert so well! Kinda like baggin an Elderbritch though (of which I have personal experience from my youth), he moves too quickly to be bagged so easily.

Everywhere I look I see Bean. Can't go grocery shopping, read the paper or watch TV without seeing something about Bean! Hellufagood Bean Dip?!? Well, at foist I wuz ticked by that slanderous statement, but then I got to thinkin bout all those times I dipped into the Beansters deep well of knowledge. So..... it's a kompliment, not sum insultin remark(G).

    Knowing what to say

Wow! Thanks for sharing...good values and staying true to those values is what it's about.
You were lucky to have such mentors around the kitchen table. Sorry not to connect in Calgary. I was held 'hostage' by your former's till it was time to go. I'd say we both got our money's worth.

What should I call it?...Mike - credit goes to the best name!

...and if all of you were to build a table of contents....say no more than 10 chapters what would they be on?

Would it be about business, marketing, public relations, leadership or how about some nitty gritty techno stuff...?

Would it be an inspirational book...a reflection on the great lessons learned from such good friends as Dan Holohan and his Mighty Merry Maze of Mechanical Mad Men!( For you Mad Dog)...

...hey I could *** reveal all *** about my evil and evicted: Jack " The Bowser" Russell Terrier - call the chapter ( and a nurse) - Never Let Your "Good Intention" In-laws Buy a Satanic Psycho Dog for a Senior Citizen. Or I could tell you about my vacationing yellow lab ZAK...he's not with us anymore he's gone away but where ever he went to have a long snooze - he's itching to get out and chase some birds...and when I pass on into eternity...I'll need the best bird dog that ever went to heaven. I'll call the chapter... "What Well Trained Hunting Dogs Can Teach Us About Chasing Down Business."

    Chapter One...Know Your Customer
Idea #1 - rough draft c/w spelling and grammar errors - get the idea down first - fix it after - right Tom: " ex Navy Pilot / SIM Chairman " Meyer!

You see it all started with this guy named Holohan ...Honorary Calgarian Holohan - boy he even sounded official in his White Stetson Hat ... Air Canada probably put em' in first class when he flew home ... I never intentionally fly first class, cost too much - no value. I fly the way billionaire Buffett flew until he bought his own airline...in the back behind the first class barrier with the rest of the econo team. Have you ever noticed - this word "barrier", between first class and economy ... what does it really mean this "barrier." I am by definition - based on the hundreds of thousands of air miles I've logged - an "Elite" member of the club. I could eat and drink for free in the Gold Members Lounge or I could check in ahead of those standing in line - behind the barrier - but I was taught if you get a chance to interview a smart guy - do it - I once gave up an airline seat from Vancouver to Calgary, an hour or so flight so I could ride shotgun for 12 hours with this customer who was driving his display rig back over the mountains into Calgary for the next show. I had never really known the Equipco boys from Vancouver, we'd seen each other here and there at functions and meetings but never really knew them - heck we even had a political moment early on in my career as an rep - they could have made a big stink about a certain lost sale on a project but I think they gave me the benefit of the doubt - chalking it up to my stupidity as an amateur, ... I never forgot this and they have never brought it up ... they brought the barrier down - it's a lesson I'll never forget...nor the other lessons learned - spend 12 hours with a great mind like **** and you'll learn a few things about his life on the farm, playing hockey in Saskatchewan or salmon fishing up the west coast, the great stories about his equally talented team of Bruce and Gary - these three guys are top dogs - first class in the neighborhood. Then there is my good friend and colleague, **** Barnett out of Colorado... - now this guy took the word "NO" and etched it into his head- spelled backward as in "ON" - as in - its show time you're "ON"!!! This guy does not know the word "off" - if he were a hunting dog he'd be a bloodhound champion! These guys - DO BUSINESS WELL.

Lets come back to Billionaire Buffet - the numero uno in eliteness...rode in the back of the bus, eats hot dogs and put his pants on one leg at a time - just like all his customers... and each year he's invited his stock holders to Omaha to eat ice cream, watch a baseball game and just get to know each other. But when it comes to business - Buffett hides nothing - he and his sidekick Munger tell it the way it is - upfront and personal...(my favorite Munger quote ..."When you mix raisons and turds ya still get turds") it's this earthiness which what makes them the shareholders leader of leaders.

Buffett and Munger buy corporations with bird dog leaders...these folks hunt business...effortlessly, relentlessly, enthusiastically, passionately, tenaciously, graciously and affectionately with humility, grace and patience...these self proclaimed "two old farts" hire the best - then get the heck out of the way and give them a business dogs serving of bones - lots of bones - as in $$$$$$$$ which is why these guys deliver profits continuously while growing their operation - For the most part no high tech stuff, Dairy Queen, See's Candy, Gillette, Roofing Supplies, H & R Block, Insurance, News Papers...stuff we buy everyday - Buffett and Munger - DO BUSINESS WELL!...if they can get rich selling everyday stuff like roofing felt and ice cream... you sure as heck can get rich selling and installing everyday stuff too - like heating equipment!

Now back to Mr. Holohan ...I've shared the odd ale with Dan and I know even if he did get a first class seat - (naturally because of his honorary status) .... I just know if there were a little boy or girl which wanted to peak into the cockpit or ride close up to the front - he'd swap seats just to see the kids smile...Dan makes a customer out of everyone he meets - kids or adults - and Dan likes to see his customers happy - Dan Holohan ...also DOES BUSINESS WELL.

The lessons these individuals tell...is success begins by traveling with your customers - take down the barriers - get to know them - collaborate...and the best choice you can make is to care enough about starting new and fresh from exactly where you are.

Fill rest of chapter with stories of people I've traveled with ...(ie: Dennis Wood - guy literally saved my life - I riding shotgun - he behind the wheel...- dodges a baseball sized rock launched directly towards my forehead from the passing truck on our right...split second reaction - "D" totally in control - swerves ( at 70 mph) and the rock explodes the passenger window just above and to the right of my noggin! Thanks D) ...next morning Dennis already has the window repaired and were out making calls as if nothing had happened !

or Paul from (then Aslan Mechanical - # of employees at that time = one) now with market leader tekmar ... drags my sorry butt out to do plumbing repairs on a dilapidated reserve - not a pretty site...lots of sadness...very dark - Paul says ... I come out for three reasons one to help out in my own little way - two it's a reality check, and three - to pick up a cheque - reserve work is good money - lesson learned ... life (like plumbing) goes up for some ... or down for others ... but have you sold anything today?)

End rough draft for a Chapter One idea --...

    Would you buy it?

    Book Title...

I love your stories Robert. Keep them coming. For a book
title, how about "Hydronic Vision", or to make it even more
personal, "Bean Vision". You have so many great talents and
have helped so many people, why not reach even more by way
of the pen. As for chapter #1, I'd go with the "Bean Principle" and take it from there. Oh by the way, you better
get rid of those air miles before that airline goes broke.

    Ethics

Judging the respect you engender and your expressed philosophy it seems incredible that ANYONE could let/force you to leave!

If more people could only believe as you that "if you truly enjoy your work, you'll never work again," we'd have a LOT less divorce, violence, abuse, and unhappiness in this world.

From the advice you've given me and others in the past you KNOW AND BELIEVE IN the product(s) you represent WITHOUT the prejudice that some must use.

Being truly ethical in this world can be frustrating as it requires you to take positions and actions that the etchically challenged will prey upon for their selfish purposes. While I doubt that anyone is ever perfect in this regard the secret is realizing when you have failed and trying to find a way to avoid it in the future. You CERTAINLY seem to have a handle on this!

The new chairman of the Securities and Exhange commission was recently on Lou Dobbs (CNN). He stated in his interview that, "...biggest problem in corporate America is a lack of morals." I take severe issue with that statement as our constitution and bill of rights ensure that our government cannot judge us based on our morals. As it always becomes a question of "Whose morals?" our founding fathers wisely only let our government judge us based on our ethics.

Were Danfoss ethics as good as their product I sincerely believe they would eliminate the situation that caused the problem. (And I HIGHLY doubt you are the "situation"!)
