That's scary. Hope every victim has a speedy recovery. Please keep us informed if you learn the cause, maybe we'll all learn something.

Steamhead you beat me to it. I have for years taught in class, based on personal experience, that hotels and pool heaters, by percentage, cause CO poisonings more than anything I have tested. What I mean is that 75% of the hotels I have tested had unsafe equipment, usually water heaters and pool heaters, Last time was a Holiday Inn Express I stayed in near Hershey Pa, in 2020. Personal monitor went off as soon as I entered the lobby to check in.

13 persons CO poisoned in the pool area and they can't figure out the source? If a fire department, that consumers depend on to save them from CO poisoning can't figure out the source in this situation, how many other consumers at risk because of fire departments lack of training in this area? Having dealt personally with fire departments all over the country and reading stories about their responses to CO incidents, they still remain #2 on my CO ignorant list.

This story is on our local tv news. Today they said the pool heater was at fault. It had been serviced last Thursday. A fire department rep said their CO meters had never detected a level that high. He said it was beyond the range limits of the CO meter. They also said the CO detector at the hotel was not working.

Amazing! People swimming in a pool get poisoned and they figured out it was the pool heater. I have tested dozens of pool heaters, in homes, apartments complexes, hotels etc., So far I found only one operating safe and it was an induced draft pool heater in a hotel in Louisville, Ky. Guess how many pool heaters are serviced by someone with a combustion analyzer and know how to use it?

Why are the pool heaters venting into the livingspace?

"Serviced last Thursday"............ now high CO.......... looks like some "tech" should not be in the business.

Dedicated pool boilers are the worst. Most are piped so they condense, very few are properly maintained, and the pool chemicals are eating them 24/7/365.
I just finished a big commercial pool project using heat exchangers fed from a boiler plant located in another part of the building. This makes me sleep much better.

Chris they are vented to the outside but they have one of the worst performing drafthoods. Things only rust and corrode because they are not operating properly, not because of chemicals. When you see rust on equipment something needs to be fixed! If we keep blaming chemicals instead of our lack of understanding of the problem, more people will get hut.

Just read an update on this. They believe it was caused by a plastic bag covering the air intake for the room. The pool wasn't even permitted to be used due to safety violations concerning lack of chlorine and a caved in floor tile. There is a laundry list of other unrelated violations too including unpermitted and unsafe electrical work and a dry sprinkler system.

Maybe this is why I bought a camper.

“Maintenance people replacing a pool heater”. In other words, the same guys who can’t fix the toe kick drain in the shower are allowed to change out a gas heater which they are clueless about. This is on management for not using a qualified licensed contractor.
