Replacing near boiler supply pipes/valves

The valves on this loop are in pretty rough shape and have scheduled a plumber to come in and replace them this week:

My question is on the procedure. Is this correct?

1. drain the boiler

2.replace the valves/pipes

3. refill and then fire the boiler to rid of the oxygen

.. or is there a way to not lose the boiler water while replacing those valves?

P.s. just a reminder that I'm in remote new mexico mountains, no steam people nearby

    depends on how much of an issue refilling it is. you could probably do some things with some jet sweats or plugs to remove things and plug them and only lose a couple gallons but that is more trouble than its worth unless refilling it is difficult.

    Steam? Check the water level in the boiler — and lower it just enough to be below those valves. Then shut off the supply and have at it. May I suggest quarter turn ball valves for replacement?

    Your going to have to drain the whole boiler. just drain it and refill when done. Run the burner until it steams and then shut it down.

    Yes, steam. I had a new ball valve replacement, strainer kit and gaskets ready but the thing is a real mess on the inside. Then i found a receipt from the last ball valve replacement dated July of 2005 so I just ordered a new unit from Patriot.
