Near boiler piping
Does the near boiler piping on this Burnham Independence look correct?

So far so good, but what have the manufacturers directions told you?

why 1 riser and not both?

If the manufacturer calls for 1 there is zero reason to have both. I don't know if this model calls for both or not, but that's the answer

Assuming that water is properly cleaned. And maintained as such.

Tell that to Williamson who only provided a single tapping!
But seriously, just because water can be horrible does that mean we should continue to add additional hardware? How far is far enough? Why not put an 8" header with a 4" equalizer?
Come on folks what are we doing

it could easily mean the difference between skimming 3 times a week apart each time and skimming daily for a week or 2.
where is the return, how does the condensate get back from a return at the far end if it is parallel floe=w or from the drips before the header connection if it is counterflow?never mind, i see the copper stub off the equalizer now.

@Ldallas_87 , it looks fine to me….. how come the boiler is just sitting there not hooked up?

Williamson provides two tappings. Just saying.
Ideally, everyone's boiler water, would be as pristine as yours. But realistically, that is often and usually not the case. Obviously, everything has to be weighed and balanced. "Under-piping", whatever that constitutes, on the assumptions of the boiler water will be pristine, can lead to a boatload of hurt. Most homeowners, will not touch their boilers. Meaning, that pristine water is in the hands of the service providers. And good luck getting customers to pay for multiple visits to achieve pristine water. Just doesn't happen. Install "larger" typing as part of the boiler installation and everyone involved will be much happier off.

I never said under-piping, I said recommended piping.
And Williamson (and even WM I believe) did have 1 supply for a time which is why I said “Provided” (past tense). Just sayin’ 😉

it was a whole controversy a few years ago. There are discussions here about it

Under-piping or proper piping or over-piping , are relative terms. Some trust the manufacturers, some don't. Following manufacturer recommendations, will give you dramatically different velocities, depending on the manufacturer and boiler size. If you are from the school, that believes that "low" steam velocity is critical, you would be inclined to not trust manufacturer minimum requirements.
Just saying.

No, it was both of them. 2018…time flies! Interesting thread with several viewpoints:

All my experiments have me agreeing with WM’s head of training as quoted below. I have never seen anyone present any evidence to the contrary.

@ethicalpaul I stand corrected. The issue with using the second tapping, was not always for the purpose of using dual risers. At least for me, it was a matter of logistics. Piping from the left side, is not always practical. Even though, the manufacturer states that you should always pipe on the side of the controls. Does not always work in the real world. And doesn't make very much sense anyway.

I hear you! I couldn’t remember all the details myself until I found the thread. The piping/controls thing seems weird to me too, if they are still saying it in the manuals.
