now I have to repack the nut on one of the radiator stems that’s leaking.
What do you think of the new settings?

Widen the differential to 1 psi.
What you want is the boiler to shut off at 1 1/2-2 psi. You want the boiler to restart at as low of a pressure as you can adjust it for ….just before the gauge needle hts 0 psi. Yo may need a 0-5 psi gauge to adjust for this as doing it with a 0-30 psi gauge will be difficult if not impossible.

There was a good tip in here about tightening the packing nut.
Tighten it while the heat is running, so you only tighten enough to silence it, and not more

yep I repacked it while cold and then had to tighten while the heat was coming up as it still leaked until it stopped

I am thinking of removing the pressuretrol and putting in a vaporstat.
What would be a good starting point for settings??

Right where that one is set.
However! Being absolutely level is critical with the mercury vapourstats. Even a tiny bit off can throw it several ounces out of calibration. Be sure that the pigtail on which it is mounted has the curl perpendicular to the body. I also recommend putting a quality low pressure gauge on the same pigtail to see what it really is doing, and adjusting the instrument to match the gauge.
