Roth Tank Cracked fittings on top

in Oil Heating

Hello, we had a Roth Tank installed 3 years ago and when I went to add some home heating oil I notice 2 of the rings that secure the liner to the metal are cracked. The filler side actually looks slanted and the rubber seal sits higher on one side. I took them off to clean and inspect. Does this happen often or does anyone know what would cause it on these 2 specifically? The Vent and the Fuel gauge side are fine. Is this something that I should replace?

    Was more wondering what would cause the fill tube side rubber seal pop out while the otger side was still flush with steel tank.

    My guess is the inner plastic tank has expanded or contracted in reference to the metal top section. Call Roth with your findings and see what they have to say

    How is tank vented? I see fill & heater, that leaves two tappings for fuel supply, gauge and vent?

    Found three tanks last week with the same problem.

    I just noticed the fuel gauge side has the same lean in towards the middle of the tank.

    This was the reply I got from Roth. For anyone else that comes across this.

    "The tilt you are seeing in the molded port connection is partly due to the cracked bulkhead nut on the adjacent port letting the inner tank top settle slightly and partly an optical illusion caused by the upward spiral of the threads molded into the port.  The slight rise in the gasket under the metal tank top accentuates the appearance of the tilt and also is likely a result of the inner tank shifting during shipping.  Most of the gasket is still under the metal top providing the seal between the top and inner tank"

    "most of the gasket is still under the metal top…". Um. Really, folks? If I put together a flange (or a cylinder head!) and tell you that well, most of the gasket is still under it, I don't think you'd be happy.

    Overtightening will crack them. Roth has a spec. and a special tool for that.
