I don't know much about thermostats and was just curious if anyone knows?

No t-stats used asbestos.Mercury is a possibility1

It wouldn't surprise me if there is a tiny amount of asbestos in some wire insulation or insulating washers or especially in the insulation in some heat anticipator resistors.0
